Giants minor leaguer Tyler Deland threw 60 pitches the maximum a pitcher
is allowed to throw in a single game -- against the Hermosa Dodgers last week.
But 60 pitches were all Deland needed to go the six-inning distance in his teams
15-4 victory. Deland insured he wouldnt go over the limit by stabbing
a line drive for the final out. Photo by Kevin Cody
HOTEL GRAY BAR: T-shirts on sale at the HBPD are decorated with a pair of cuffed hands behind bars and the words "Hermosa Beach Bed & Breakfast, over 50,000 served." We dont know if the B&Bs patrons really want a souvenir, but if they do, its $15 for a T-shirt, and another $15 for a matching cap
ONE MORE TIME: Supporters of yet another move to strike down HBs 6 percent utility users tax (see story page 6) decided to cast a wide net when they sent a press release around to news agencies. They faxed the South Bay newspapers, two news desks at the LA Times, the Daily News, Orange County Register, Metropolitan News, LA Daily Journal, Wall Street Journal, New York Times and Washington Post. "The way California has been in the spotlight, you never know," said anti-taxer Kathy Bergstrom of the long-shot fax technique. "All life is whimsy, dear," she added
FOOL PROOF: Plan for one less hour of sleep this Sunday April 1, when daylight savings time goes into effect. Or sleep in and try the old April Fools on your family and friends when you show up late for church or surfing.
TWIN TOWERS: Our suggestion for a defense against critics who say the proposed 25-foot-higth, twin towers at the head of the Hermosa pier will block views. Add spiral staircases that lead to twin observations platforms. Local surfers could check out the surf from Bluffs Cove to Little Dume
