Dick, "the sheephead killer," of the Redondo Fishing Pier shows off his world class 21 pounder.

Well Mates, there would be only a few days left to sign up for the Marina Del Rey Angelers Halibut Derby to be held this weekend, March 31 - April 1. Wit all the big flatties being dragged over the rails these last few weeks, some South Bay fisherman is going to drive home a new F150 truck to carry that 40 lb.-plus Halibut winner! Call Dora Belda (310) 397-0053 or Email DORAIBEW@aol.com for more info...

If'in ya can't fish this derby there would be another the weekend of April 7-8 by the name of Santa Monica Bay Halibut Derby. You can win fishing trips for two or a Bay Runner boat wit a 50 lb-plus Halibut. Call Big John Bourget at (310) 450-5131. There has been a running fishing duel between these two derbys for years wit bragging rites over which derby produces the winning Halibut. Big John sez, "This is high steaks, Halibut that is..." John is banking on the moon cycles to help with the big catch.

As to fishing this week in the South Bay from Santa Monica to Torrance Beach, the Halibut took the week off. I'm sure they be resting up for all the action coming their way for the next two weeks. Picture this, you're a Halibut and 1,000 fishermen wit every kind of bait filled wit trap hooks is dangling in front of yer lips. You're in an eating mood. Well, it's dinner you'll be on an anglers table; that's wat you'll be.... What a world. AArg Sez the Captain... Hot tip of the week: comes from Jim Rounds, Head Guy, at the Halibut Hatchery. This week all his Big Momma Halibut, the Ladies he calls'em, started laying their eggs -- millions at a time! If'in yer a fisherman, I would call that Easter Eggs. What does this mean? If their laying in the lab, they would be laying in the wild. Word has it that more fish are moving in and more to come; so get ready...

Out on the Islands Man, the White Sea Bass are starting to nibble along wit a few Yellow Tail. Some big fish were spotted off Rocky Point; but alas they was whales. The Rock Cods have been the only fish that wanted to be invited to dinner this week. Captain Mike at the Redondo Fishing Pier sez, "Wit'out dem Cods we would'a been sucking mud."

And, mud it was on all the fresh water lakes wit Catfish. For those who eats them, the big cats sprung into action hitting all that stink bait. The Bucket Mouth Bass are moving up into the shallows. Trout fishing is tailing off except in the high mountains. Keep an eye on the Yellow Tail bite south of the border down Mexico way. Ensenada and San Quintin should break wide open soon. Be sure to watch them north winds...

Be sure to keep sending yer fish tails and fish pictures to Captain Jack C/O the Easy Reader P.O. Box 427, Hermosa Beach, CA 90254 or Email easyreader@earthlink.net. ER
