Costa coach proud of team’s Bay League, playoff record

by Paul Teetor

The Mira Costa boys basketball team won two tournaments, finished third in the Bay League after moving up from the Ocean League, and made it to the second round of the playoffs.

All in all, not a bad year for Coach Glenn Marx.

"I have a good feeling about this team. I’m real proud of these kids," Marx said after the Mustangs ended their season with a 55-50 loss to Temescal Canyon. They finished 17-10 overall and 8-6 in the Bay League.

The Mustangs fell behind by 16 points but then staged a furious rally for their screaming fans that fell just short.

The support of the crowd and the school was tremendous," Marx said. "It was against a first place team. With their support, we came firing back and had a chance to win the game. It was symbolic of the kind of season we had."

In their last poll, the Daily Breeze ranked Mira Costa fifth among area teams, behind Westchester, Bishop Montgomery, Redondo and Inglewood.

"Every one of those teams is playing in a championship game this weekend," he said. "I think we exceeded expectations."

So much for the good news. The bad news is that the Mustangs lose all five starters.

But Marx insisted there is help on the way.

"We’ll exceed expectations again next year. We have three rotation players back in Greg Geier, Rocky Casulli and Brandon Hodges, and I’m real high on Nick Goeden, a 6-foot-5 freshman who was our starting junior varsity center," he said. "We’ve got a strong off-season development program. Now we’ll see who wants to step up and claim a starting spot."

Girls Soccer: Buena 2, Mira Costa 0: The Mustang’s march to another championship game was halted Thursday when they failed to score against Buena, the team that beat them in last year’s championship game. After recording 12 shutouts, goalie Chelsea McCarthy gave up a goal in the first minute and Mira Costa never recovered.

Tennis: The 2nd Annual Head/Penn Doubles Championship, scheduled for last weekend at the West End Racquet Club in Torrance, was postponed due to rain. The tournament, featuring former touring pros like Jim Pugh and Anand Amirtraj, will be played instead the weekend of March 10 and 11. Please call 542-7373 for additional information. ER
