FROM THE DECK

by Captain Jack

It's Rock Cod Time Again

Dan Luna and his mysterious floating fishing rod and reel. Dan found the rod and reel floating off the Redondo Canyon in 65 feet of water.

Well Mates, if'in ya been out there hunting for Halibut between all the winter storms and ain't been having much luck like most other folks, come March 1 you can go out on them banks again for Rock Cod! There will be full boats from Redondo Beach to Marina del Rey, so make those reservations NOW...Or, you'll be swimming.

The Redondo Beach fishing pier will be running the Special and the Sea Spray; call Captain Mike at (310) 372-2111. Out of Del Rey you can hop on the Betty O or the Spitfire sez Captain Rick of Marina Del Rey Sportsfishing at (310) 372-3712.

I hate to admit that Fish and No Game could be rite about letting them little coddlies lay their eggs between January and March without any fishing pressure from us human folk. However, just before the Jan. 1 ban on Cod fishing, I was metering mounds of fish out on the banks. I went out again a few days ago to see if them fish are still there. Well, now, there is more fish on the bottom than I ever did see on a meter. Darn near broke me screen on the sonar. AArg...

Wit all the inshore fishing gone south due to the storms, if'in there is a break in the weather, which is predicted, me mates and I will be dropping some squid on them Cod Fish. All other fishing is on hold until these low-pressure systems move out, except for fresh water Trout and Catfish. Up and down Califrisco from the mountains to the sea the fresh water boys have been putting us salty dogs to shame. Them Large Mouth Bucket Bass are starting to move and Striped Bass on the Colorado is about to take off.

Out on the Islands, Man, a good showing of Squid is helping to get that Spring Yellow Tail and White Sea Bass bite off to a bang. We just don't know when the bang will be. Just get yer gear ready for a trip to the islands and watch the fish counts.

Way down, Mexico, Cabo Wabo way good numbers of small Tuna have moved in wit some big boys to back them up. The problem is the SoCal winds pick up steam in the gulf and has blown fishing out in Loreto and La Paz. Before you shell out the green backs, check all weather reports for Mexico. AArg Sez the Captain....

Story of the week: goes to Martin "Hook'em in the Lip" and Andre the Mackerel Killer wit Hobbs the Knob who all limited out on Torrance Beach Halibut during that two day bite. Each fisherman landed five keeper fish each! Andre said, "It's the best day of fishing I ever had in my life!" Way to go boys — now that's a tale to tell.

Special Notice: Marina del Rey Anglers are planning their 27th Halibut Derby, March 31 and April 1. The angler who lands the biggest Halibut will win a new Ford F150 Truck. You'll need it to carry that monster home. For more info call (310)397-0053.

A derby meeting is scheduled for 7 p.m. March 14 at Burton Chace Park Community Meeting Room for to answer all yer questions.
