Police Beat: Redondo Beach

Carjacking

At a business on the 1600 block of Hawthorne Boulevard, two young men approached a man in a parked car. The men pulled out a gun, and demanded that the man get out of his car. He got out, and they drove away in his 1999 Honda Accord. A suspect in the carjacking was arrested Thursday, Feb 15 after Los Angeles County sheriff’s deputies checked out the license plate of a similar Honda in Carson and stopped the car. Police say the driver matched the description of one of the suspects. He was booked and held at the Redondo Beach Police Department jail.

Leave the light on

Friday, Feb. 16, a Redondo Beach Police officer was called to investigate a vehicle burglary. Outside a bar on Artesia Boulevard, someone had ransacked an unlocked car, stealing about 200 CDs, a cell phone and a purse containing cash and credit cards. Acting on a tip, police located a possible suspect at a Gardena motel, and arrested her on suspicion of cocaine possession. She told officers where some of the stolen property was hidden, according to a police report.

Ice to glass

Burglars smashed out the door of a store on Catalina Avenue, setting off a burglar alarm. By the time officers arrived, the thieves had disappeared, leaving behind shards of glass and smashed display cases, where jewelry once was stored.

Two vans were broken into on the 3400 block of Inglewood Boulevard the night of Wednesday, Jan. 31 between 9 p.m. and 10:15 p.m. Someone broke into a 1995 Safari van by prying open a door lock. The steering column was smashed in an attempt to steal the vehicle. A 1990 Astro van had its window smashed. The would-be thief tried to steal the vehicle by damaging the steering column. ER
