Two new candidates

Yuri Gurvich and Bob Lay have submitted nomination papers as write-in candidates for city council. Their names will be added to the March 6 ballot, pending verification of the 20 signatures of registered voters required by the county.

Metlox hearing

The public hearing for a final environmental impact report on proposed development at the former Metlox Potteries site will be 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 28 at City Hall, 1400 Highland Ave. Copies of the document are available at City Hall for $20 in paper or CD-ROM form. The local Los Angeles County Library branch, 1320 Highland Ave., also has copies for viewing. The document can be viewed on the internet at the city’s website, www.ci.manhattan-beach.ca.us/. A fiscal impact report for the Metlox site also is available on the website and at City Hall free of charge. For more information call Laurie Jester at 802-5510.

Searching for Olympians

The Manhattan Beach Parks and Recreation Commission is looking for past and present Olympians in order to place their names on a plaque on the pier. So far the list contains Jeff Atkinson, Michael Bright, Michael Dodd, Eric Fonoimoana, Barbara Fontana, Carl Henkel, Thomas Hintnaus, Brian Ivie, Joy Ellen Kitzmiller, Holly McPeak, Cliff Meidl, David O’Hara, Jeff Tarangao and David Vanole. Anyone who knows of additional Manhattan Olympians are urged to contact Betsey King at 802-5404

Grad night help needed

The Mira Costa Grad Night Committee needs adult volunteers to plan and chaperone a June 21 "Safe and Sober" event. The group is also accepting donations for the event from business and community members. Donations can be mailed to: MCHS GRAD committee, P.O. Box 1079, Manhattan Beach 90266.
