Queen for a day
This month the Distinguished Speakers series plays host to the Queen Noor al-Hussein, the American-born wife of the late King Hussein of Jordan. Noor will speak to a sold out crowd Thursday, Feb. 1 at 8 p.m. at the Redondo Beach Performing Arts Center at 1935 Manhattan Beach Blvd. in Redondo Beach. An advocate of international exchange and understanding, Noor has been a champion of environmental protection and womens and childrens rights.
Candidates forum
The Redondo Beach Coordinating Council will host a candidates forum Tuesday, Feb. 6 at noon moderated by the League of Women voters. The forum will be held at the Beach Cities Health Center Auditorium, 514 North Prospect Ave. Candidates for city offices and the school board will be present.
Campaign kickoff
The football season might be over, but the campaign season has just begun. The campaign kickoff party for Councilman Kevin Sullivan (District 2) will be 6 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 1 at the Blue Moon Saloon, 207 N. Harbor Drive. Tickets are $25 each. Sullivan is running against local businessman James Coleman in the Redondo Beach municipal election Tuesday, March 6.
School bond oversight
Redondo Beach Unified School District is accepting applications from city residents wishing to apply to serve on the Superintendents Bond Oversight Committee. The committee will meet quarterly and see that the spending of bond funds dovetails with the stipulations of the ballot measure that approved the bonds. Applicants must be at least 18 years old and must have some knowledge of facility upgrading.
