Raising readers

Principal Christine Norvell will host a workshop on "How to raise an enthusiastic reader" 7 p.m. Tuesday in the Pacific School cafeteria, 1214 Pacific Ave. The lecture will stress the importance of reading as an academic skill, and how parents can teach and support reading at home. A few good leaders

The Manhattan Beach Parks and Recreation Department is accepting applications for part-time teen and playground leaders, tennis monitors and building attendants. Applicants must be 18 or older, have completed high school, and have leadership or volunteer experience. Teen center and playground program leaders must also have completed 24 units of college coursework. Applications are available at City Hall, 1400 Highland Ave., or on the city’s website at www.ci.manhattan-beach.ca.us, or by calling 802-5403.

Seaman makes good

Mira Costa alumnus Petty Officer 3rd Class Brian S. Veach graduated from the Navy’s Basic Nuclear Power School in Goosecreek, South Carolina in January. He is now qualified to operate a reactor on a nuclear powered submarine or aircraft carrier. ER
