A $500 REWARD will go to whomever comes up with a new name for Las Olas, the thriving HB eatery owned by local luminaries such as gold medal Olympian Eric Fonoimoana and Pennywise guitarist Fletcher Dragge. They have to ditch the Las Olas name because a guy with a taco joint in San Diego has it trademarked (for details, see story page 8). By the way, our two suggestions for the new name are "La Ola," or "We Are Far Superior To Any San Diego Taco Joint"
WHEN IN ROME: Hawthorne Savings new downtown Hermosa Beach branch, with its open air entrance and popcorn machine, resembles a sidewalk café more than a bank. But its cleverest idea for attractive passersby to come into the branch is the wide screen TV behind the tellers. It shows surfing and snowboarding videos.
ABOUT TIME: You know those low-lying light fixtures along HBs shiny Pier Plaza? The ones that never worked? Well, the city is fixing to tear up some pavement along the Strand for renovations at the base of the municipal pier (see story page 9), so they say now is the time to fix those lights as well. The light-fixing will be funded by a settlement with a contractor who helped build the plaza
PATH MOST TAKEN? A majority of the HB city council members have said they want the public to vote on whether to lay down a new bike path that would run through town along the beach, right next to the Strand. This week Mayor John Bowler said he wants the bike path matter included in the November ballot, in the first public announcement of when he wants the voters to decide
HOW MUCH FOR A POUND?
A Manhattan man reported to police last week that he saw his neighbor throw
dog feces at his garage. The cops came out, took a statement from the man, and
wrote in their report that the poop had a value of $1. The dog must have been
a golden retriever.
WESTSIDE JUDGEMENT: Newly appointed Superior Court Judge Emilie Elias addressed a group of Westside attorneys several years ago and criticized them for looking down on attorneys who practiced "south of Century." After her talk, an attorney in the audience told her, "You misspoke. Century runs north and south." The attorney assumed she was talking about the four-block long Century in Century City, rather than Century Blvd., which stretches east from LAX to the San Gabriel Freeway. Elias recalled the story during her address at the South Bay Bar Associations Annual Judges Night Saturday at the Torrance Marriott.
KNABES MASTER PLAN: Supervisor Don Knabe will hold a press conference on the LAX Master Plan Friday at 10 a.m. at the Manhattan Beach City Hall. Knabe has been critical of LAX planners for not making the expansion plans 12,000-page environmental Impact Report more accessible to the public. He is also critical of the fact only one public hearing on the plan will be held locally, on June 9 at the Manhattan Beach Marriott. Locally, the printed plans are available at the El Segundo library, the Hawthorne library and the Proud Bird Restaurant. The plan may also be viewed at www.lax2015.org. Downloading the plan requires Adobe Acrobat.
