City hammers out deal with fired finance director

City hammers out deal with fired finance director

by Jason Dietrich

Redondo Beach’s former finance director will continue to receive her paycheck and insurance coverage for five months following her resignation from the city.

Agnes Walker was placed on administrative leave in late October by City Manger Lou Garcia, leading to a tug of war between the city clerk and city manager over the control of the finance department. The city council has put City Manager Lou Garcia in charge of the city’s finances and has placed an initiative on the March, 2001 ballot to modify the charter to cement that change.

The Redondo Beach City Council approved Walker’s agreement Tuesday night during a closed session meeting. Wednesday morning, lawyers on both sides hadn’t approved the agreement, but City Attorney Jerry Goddard said he expected the deal to go through in the next several days.

City Clerk Sandy Forrest said Walker had faxed in her signed agreement days ago.

Walker, who had worked for the city for seven years, was near the top of the position’s $6,120 to $7,961 monthly pay range said Goddard. She would not receive any other severance pay apart from insurance benefits, he added.

"It’s a pretty standard agreement," Goddard said.ER
