About Town - Hermosa Beach

HB students score

Hermosa Valley School students once again scored well on the state's Academic Performance Index, improving on their base score by 13 points, local educators announced on Wednesday.

The year 2000 score for the school was 851, up from last year's 838. The index is based upon the students' standardized testing. At Hermosa View School only about 100 students take the standardized tests, and state officials do not apply the index to school populations that small.

Holiday juice

Jamba Juice outlets in Hermosa Beach, Manhattan Beach and Redondo Beach, along with the Palos Verdes Peninsula, are collecting new toys, clothes, shoes, and cash donations for Sky’s the Limit, a San Pedro-based charity that provides assistance to underprivileged children and those with special needs, through Christmas Eve. Mo cheer

It’s nearly zero hours for the toy and toiletries drive by Cheer for Children, an all-volunteer organization helping the South Bay’s special needs kids.

The group, which boasts hundreds of volunteers, each year brings Santa to more than 1,000 children referred by schools, churches and social workers. The Adopt a Family Program gives out toys and toiletries, including more than 3,000 toothbrushes in a given year.

In addition Cheer for Children hosts holiday parties for acutely ill children and their siblings.

The last-minute Cheer for Children 2000 wish list includes toothbrushes, toothpaste, and items for teenage girls including movie theater, music and school supply certificates, or certificates for shoes, groceries, haircuts, socks, or slipper socks, or Walkman-type radios
