Girls soccer: Bishop Montgomery 3, Mira Costa 2: Bishop Montgomery jumped ahead to a 3-1 lead and was able to fight off a late attack by Mira Costa to capture the home victory. Lyndie Rudolph and Renee Scachetti both scored off Courtney Moseley assists. Lianne Dillion also scored off an Andrea Valadez corner kick for the Knights (4-2). Kelley Blaise and Crystal James scored Mira Costa's goals. Mira Costa advanced to the championship match of the South Torrance Holiday Tournament with victories over Santa Barbara and Harvard-Westlake. Lindsey Veris and Nikki David each scored goals and Chelsea McCarthy notched the shutout as the Mustangs overcame Santa Barbara, 2-0, in the quarterfinals. Then Mira Costa beat Harvard-Westlake on penalty kicks, 3-1, after a 1-1 tie in regulation. Angie Oswald , Blais and James each drilled penalty kicks while McCarthy allowed just one. James scored the lone goal in regulation for Mira Costa (6-1-1).
Boys Basketball: Mira Costa 50, West Torrance 46: DeWayne Morris scored nine of his game-high 15 points in the fourth quarter as Mira Costa outscored West 14-10 to take the victory. Jacob Insler and Chase Wixom added 12 points each. St. Monica’s 71, Mira Costa 58: Morris and Wixom each scored 16 points for Mira Costa, but St. Monica’s went on a 40-27 second half run for the win.
South Torrance 48, Mira Costa 46: The Spartans (4-3) jumped out to a six-point lead in the first quarter and never trailed, although the Mustangs (4-3) made a third-quarter run, thanks to a press and half-court trap. Matt Peterson had 13 points and 12 rebounds for South, while Clete Albitz also scored 13. Insler led all scorers with 17.
Mira Costa 59, El Segundo 54: All-tournament selection Wixom scored 28 points on 10-of-11 shooting to lift the visiting Mustangs to 5-3 in the pre-season. Morris scored 12 while Insler added eight and 10 assists for Mira Costa.
Boys soccer: Mira Costa's Tommy Britton scored on a breakaway in the 70th minute to break a 1-1 tie and send the Mustangs to a 2-1 victory over host Roosevelt in the South Bay/Westside Tournament. Keith Lovell had given Mira Costa a 1-0 lead in the 20th minute, but Roosevelt tied the game in the 55th minute on a penalty kick. Beverly Hills 2, Mira Costa 1: Senior Britton scored his third goal of the season to give Mira Costa a 1-0 lead, but host Beverly Hills (1-0-1) scored two before halftime to take the match. In the Millikan tournament Mira Costa 2, Saddleback 1; Mira Costa 5, Rosemead 2: Ryan Chang scored in the 50th minute against Saddleback to break a 1-1 tie in a round-robin game. Erol Basol scored the first goal and sophomore goalie Andrew Britton made 11 saves in the victory. Against Rosemead, Michael Lanphere scored twice while Keith Lovell , Kevin Lovell and Tommy Britton also scored for Mira Costa (5-2-1).
Girls water polo: Mira Costa's Paige Runnels and Mary Avery had two goals apiece to lead host Mira Costa to an 8-5 non-league victory over Chadwick. Ali Lindahl had four goals for Chadwick, which dropped to 4-3. Mira Costa now stands at 3-3.

Boys Basketball: Redondo 73, Cajon 48: Dijon Thompson's defense held Donovan Morris, Cajon's best scorer, to six points in the second half, allowing Redondo to win the pool-play game at Ocean View High. Thompson also grabbed nine rebounds while Wendell White led the offense with 22 points and 13 rebounds and Adam Zahn added 19. In the Tournament of Champions Redondo 68, Centennial 51: Thompson took over the pool-play game at Ocean View High with 32 points and 14 rebounds for Redondo (5-1). Keith Ellison added 10 points and was 2-for-2 on 3-pointers. Centennial's Tony Key scored 23 points, but Redondo coach Jim Nielsen said Paul Meynen did a solid defensive job on Key, who is 6-foot-9 and 275 pounds.
Thompson scored 23 points and Zahn had 21 points to lead the Redondo to a 62-52 victory over host Ocean View (3-1) in the semifinals of the Tournament of Champions on Friday. The score was tied at half and Redondo was up by two after three quarters. But the Sea Hawks earned the victory by outscoring Ocean View in the fourth quarter, 15-7. Zahn collected 14 rebounds and Thompson and junior Paul Meynen each pulled down 11. Thompson and Ellison each had seven assists.
Girls basketball: Redondo 55, Ayala 44: Ofa Tulikihihifo had a double-double with 14 points and 12 rebounds while Krista Areyan added 11 points and 5 rebounds for Redondo in the victory (2-0). In the Brea-Olinda Tournament, Brea-Olinda beat 55-42 in a grudge re-match of their epic post-season struggles from last winter. Jennifer Katsuyama finished with 15 points to lead Brea-Olinda to the tournament title. In the 2000 Southern Section Division II final, Redondo won, but Brea-Olinda captured the Southern California championship en route to a state title in the weeks after that. Tulikihihifo netted nine points to lead Redondo.
Girls soccer: El Segundo's Briana Spagnuolo scored in the 55th minute and the Eagles tied host Redondo, 2-2, in the South Bay/Westside Tournament. Overtime was not played. Redondo's Courtney Cambra scored off an assist from Morgan Mathis in the 46th minute to give Redondo the 2-1 lead, but El Segundo (3-0-2) answered with Spagnuolo's goal. El Segundo's first goal was scored by Katrina Cruickshank and Redondo's by Liz Arreola. Redondo 10, Serra/San Diego 5; Rancho Buena Vista 5, Redondo 4 (double sudden-death): Kelsy Haroldson scored four goals and Betsy Schroeder and Katie Steiner each added two in Redondo's third-round win, but the Sea Hawks fell in the fourth round of the Poway Tournament in San Diego. Redondo 0, Peninsula 0 (Redondo wins on PKs, 3-0): Redondo's Sarah Butterfield blocked three penalty kicks and recorded her third shutout to give the Sea Hawks the victory. Daisy Demelo , Arreola and Kendall Brower each converted penalty kicks for Redondo... Redondo 6, West Hills (San Diego) 4; Torrey Pines 7, Redondo 5: Venus Trovato finished with five goals while Kelsy Haroldson added four goals in helping the Sea Hawks (4-7) split their final two matches of the 32-team tournament. Betsy Schroeder added two goals.
Boys soccer: Midfielder Mike Whitcher broke through the right side of the South Torrance defense and scored on a breakaway to give Redondo a 1-0 nonleague home victory in soccer. Whitcher's goal came in the 55th minute and was preceded by a strong defensive effort from both teams. Redondo is 2-2-2 and South fell to 1-1. Redondo goalie Steven Merriwether made four saves to record his fourth shutout of the year. In the Poway Invitational...Rancho Bernardo 4, Redondo 1: Venus Trovato scored in the first minute of the game to give Redondo (2-5) a 1-0 brief lead.
South Bay notes:
ECC basketball: El Camino overcame a 14-point halftime deficit to make it close, but fell, 70-68 at Cypress College. Tracey Cathey led the Warriors (6-4) with 28 points, including six 3-pointers on 10 attempts. Jermel Brooks added 17 points and seven assists as well as 12 points for Kyle Shumway
Kyle Shumway scored 22 points and made five three-pointers to lead host El Camino (7-4) to a 78-72 non-conference victory over Glendale. Teammate Tracy Cathey had 17 points, while Jamal Brooks had 15 points and eight assists. Duane Castillo added 11 points and eight rebounds...JC women's basketball: Tiffany Servio (St. Mary's Academy) scored 37 points, including going 10-for-10 from the line, and added seven rebounds in leading visiting El Camino (5-5) to a 78-69 South Coast Conference victory over East Los Angeles. Crystal Cawdrey added 17 points for the Warriors.
Soccer: After winning the regular-season title with a 14-2-1 record, the North Redondo Beach AYSO Region 17 Nobodie boys under-14 team captured the Magnificent 7 Turkey Tournament with five straight victories. The Southern California United boys under-14 team won the regular-season Gold bracket and League Cup of the Coast Soccer League, then won the Nomads Thanksgiving Tournament in San Diego... The Christ Lutheran boys team claimed its fourth straight South Bay Middle School league championship with a 3-2 victory over Rolling Hills Prep...The San Pedro AYSO Guavas girls under-10 team went unbeaten in league at 6-0-2 to finish first...

Water polo classes: A group of 14 and under boys and girls practice water polo at El Segundo the plunge Saturdays from 9:30 to 11 a.m. The cost is $15.00 per month. All ability levels welcome.
A competitive masters water polo run by Phil Navarro works out at Mira Costa High Scool Mondays and Wednesday nights from 8 p.m. to 10 p.m. Gary O'Brien runs a similar operation at Santa Monica High School on Tuesday and Thursday nights.
Holiday camps:
The Ninth Annual Peninsula Holiday Basketball Camp will take place Dec. 26-29 at Palos Verdes Intermediate School. Boys and girls in grades K-8 are welcome. The cost is $125. The Wilson Park YMCA will host a basketball clinic for kids ages 8-14 from Dec. 27-30 at the Wilson Park Gymnasium. The YMCA will host a clinic for 8-10-year-olds from 2-3:30 p.m. each day while 11-14-year-olds will meet from 3:30-5 p.m. The cost is $35 for facility members and $60 for program members. Volleyball sign-ups: The United States Youth Volleyball League is accepting registration for its eight-week spring programs for boys and girls ages 8-14.
