Barfly, December 14, 2000

DebL

Closing: Belle Richardson is closing her boutique, Ring My Belle, Hermosa Ave, HB at the end of the month after nearly five years in business. She has decided to go back to her favorite profession: The bar business, and we welcome her to it! Having over 12 years experience behind the bar, she has moved up to LA with plans already in motion to open a small, hip bar with a cool vibe, à la Side Door, MB, mid-late next year. Stop by to wish her, “bon chance”…

Lights Lights Lights: Week-end events of note: This Friday and Saturday, December 15 and 16 check out the Annual Holiday Festival of Lights and pageant at Salvation Army Crestmont College, RPV from 6-9pm. Call 377.0481 for more info. Also this Saturday, December 16, the ninth annual Christmas Boat Parade in the main channel of King Harbor, RB, from 5:30-7pm. The parade will be marshaled by actor Mickey Rooney, the theme being, “It’s A Great White Christmas.” All boaters are invited to enter with forms available at the RB Chamber of Commerce or the King Harbor Yacht Club. Partial proceeds from boat entries go to the King Harbor Youth Foundation, a nonprofit organization established to promote sailing among young children and teenagers. Call 376.2459 for more info. Finally, and again, this Saturday, December 16, if you want to get out of the South Bay, check out “Cruise of Lights,” an ocean cruise of the beautifully adorned waterfront homes along the channels of Huntington Harbor, Huntington Beach. The event, sponsored by the Hermosa Beach Chamber of Commerce, is $17 or $14 resident discount, and includes bus transportation to the marina in Huntington Beach. The bus leaves from the Hermosa Community Center at 5:30pm. Call 318.0280 for more info…

Tuesday Event: Next Tuesday, December 19, Café Boogaloo invites you to its annual holiday party with entertainment by the Boogaloo All-Stars. Owner Steven Roberts is waiving the cover charge for this event and allowing Happy Hour to go on all night long. Ho ho ho…

Interactive Christmas Present: January 25, 1996 was both a sad day and a momentous day: “Rent,” the musical made its Broadway debut just hours after writer Jonathan Larson passed away. Having seen it 127 times myself (so I exaggerate a bit), I feel compelled to let you know each and every time the production comes to Southern California, which by the way is not often enough. This year’s stint will be at the Orange County Performing Arts Center in Costa Mesa from Tuesday, December 26 through Sunday, December 31. To guarantee yourself a date, buy two tix and give one as a Christmas present while keeping the other for yourself (pretty slick huh?). Call 714.740.7878 for more info and tickets. “No day but today”…

Happy Hour Of Note: Sharks Cove, Hermosa Ave, HB has a great Happy Hour about which no one seems to know: Monday-Friday, 4-7pm; $2 domestic bottles or draughts; $3 import bottles or draughts; “2 for 1 u-call-it” drinks (top shelf and shots not included); half-price app menu. They also have weekly specials: 2 for 1 cheeseburgers, $1.50 beef or chicken tacos, $2.50 Corona’s and $3 Cuervo Tequilla all night on Tuesdays; $4 basket of wings, $2 domestic draughts and Terrence behind the bar to taunt you when your team loses all night Wednesdays; and $8.95 one-pound Porterhouse steak dinners with fries and salad plus $3 Jack Daniel’s, Captain Morgan or kamikaze drinks on Thursdays. Sharks Cove is great because it’s dark enough to allow you to slip out unnoticed if your team gets pummeled like my Knicks did last Wednesday…
