Boys soccer: Eric Basol scored two goals as Mira Costa beat Bishop Montgomery, 3-0, in the South Bay Westside Tournament. Michael Lanphere's 43rd minute goal put Mira Costa ahead in its game against Redondo, but the Sea Hawks tied it three minutes later, and it finished that way, 1-1. Costa split its first two matches at the Milikan Tournament in Long Beach, posting a 4-0 winner over Muir before losing to Santa Barbara, 1-0. Ryan Chang, Kevin Lovell, Jose Garcia and Keith Lovell all scored, and goalkeeper Andrew Britton recorded his first shutout.
Girls soccer: Mira Costa opened the South Torrance Holiday Tournament with an 8-0 victory over Lancaster, and a 3-0 victory over Santa Monica as Sacha Wohn and Megan McConnell each scored two goals.
Girls basketball: Tara Whiteside scored 18 points and Megan Whiteside added 15 as Costa advanced to the second round of the Mayflower Bellflower Tournament, defeating Glenn 68-27 in girls basketball. Stephanie Manasse scored 12 points for the Mustangs. Tara's two free throws with less than seven seconds left in the game gave her team a 46-44 win over Wilson of Long Beach. She scored 23 on the game. North was too tough for them in the semis, though, winning by 56-55. Against Valley Christian, Whiteside scored 24 points, but Costa still lost 48-43.
Wrestling: Costa finished third at the Downey 10-Way after posting an 8-2 record at the wrestling tournament. The Mustangs were represented by four individual champions, including Sean Ryan (145 pounds), Quinn Ryan (189 pounds), Cory Purpin (215 pounds) and heavyweight Marcel Gibson.
Girls soccer: Desiree Flint scored the only goal in Redondo's 1-0 win over Culver City in a girls soccer match. Against Hawthorne, Flint scored both her team's goals in a 2-2 tie. Desiree scored and assisted on Daisy Demelo's goal to lead the team to a 2-0 win over Notre Dame. Redondo 8, Long Beach Wilson "B" 7; Chadwick 10, Redondo 7.
Girls water polo: Chadwick was too much for the Sea Hawks in a 12-6 non-league match. Brea-Olinda beat Redondo, 14-1, in the Benson Cup Tournament at El Dorado High. Esperanza's B team beat them, 7-6, but the Mustangs gained some revenge by beating Brea-Olinda, 9-3. Redondo then beat Wilson's (Long Beach) B squad, 8-7.
Girls basketball: Gary Klein of the Los Angeles Times ranked Redondo Union eighth in the Greater Los Angeles Area in a pre-season girls hoops' poll. Redondo beat powerful Brea-Olinda for the Southern Section II-AA title last year, but lost in the Southern California Regionals. Narbonne, last year's National Champions, is ranked first again. On Tuesday Redondo defeated Westchester 68-40 in the firstround of theBrea Tournament. Forward Krista Areyan scored 13 points. Krisztina Fulikci and jackie Packard each scored 11 points and pulled down five rebounds.
Boys soccer: Bishop Montgomery shut out Redondo, 3-0, in boys soccer in non league action. Senior James Leary had a goal and an assist to lead the host Knights (1-1).
South Bay notes
Bishop Montgomery: Graduate Katie Olsovsky was named to the 2000 Pac-10 All-Freshman volleyball team. The 6-foot-3 middle blocker from Torrance,
in her first season at USC, was one of six selected.
El Camino College: Mira Costa Alum Robert Hodge was named first team quarter back on the J.C. Grid-Wire All American Team. Fourteen El Camino football players were named to the 2000 All-Mission Conference Northern Division team. Manhattan Beach resident John Featherstone was co-coach of the year. Hodge was named the conferences Offensive Player of the Year. On first-team offense, Hodge, wide receiver Devin Pitts and place-kicker David Davis were unanimous selections. Also on the first-team offense were: wide receiver Dennis Jones, kicker Jose Hanson and linemen Jeramie Stewart and Adam Boyd. Running back Darin Pope and wide receiver Chris Chatman were on the second team. Defensively, linemen Danny Lockhart and Keenan Curtis joined linebackers Willie Chavez and Adam Blake. In the defensive backfield, Kayjeai Williams and Marcello Dodson were on the first team with punter Eddie Pazos.
Point guard Jermel Brooks scored 25 points and had eight assists, and guard Tracey Cathey finished the game with 25 points for El Camino JC as it defeated visiting Rio Hondo 83-78 in a non conference game. ER
