The Mira Costa boys’ basketball team was narrowly defeated by the Carson Colts, 47-39, in a tough defensive battle Saturday in the finals of the 49th Annual Pacific Shores basketball tournament at Costa.

The first quarter was a defensive display for both teams. The first points weren’t scored until nearly halfway through the quarter. Among Costa scorers were Archie Wiley IV, DeWayne Morris, and Jacob Insler. Costa led at the end of the first quarter, 8-6.

Costa began the quarter with a good offensive rebound by Jason Shamburg. A little later, forward David Cummings of Carson left the game on an injury. It was a free throw duel for the rest of the quarter until DeWayne Morris of Costa hit his first of several three-pointers. The score at the end of the first half was tied at 16 each.

Costa shot right back at the beginning off the second half with another three-pointer by Morris in response to a nice shot by Carson all-tournament player Errol Jackson Jr. Archie Wiley IV had a block, a three-pointer, and a steal, and Blake Anderson had a great basket under pressure. Along with yet another Costa three-pointer by DeWayne Morris, Costa led at the end of the third, 29-26.

Carson took control of the game in the fourth quarter, capitalizing on Errol Jackson Jr.’s 14 fourth-quarter points. With the score 35-31 Carson and under five minutes remaining, Costa pulled within two on two free throws by Jacob Insler. But Carson kept putting up the points. Costa got within three on its last basket on a great steal and lay-up by Jason Shamburg. Costa would score two more to Carson’s seven making the final score 47-39 Carson.

Two Costa players, DeWayne Morris and Jason Shamburg, made the all tournament team in Costa’s second place finish. Ekene Ibekwe of Carson received the tournament MVP award.

After the game, Costa coach Glenn Marx said he was pleased, especially with the defense, despite the loss. "What we were able to do against Ekene Ibekwe after the way he played against other teams is a good sign," commented Glenn Marx about the MVP’s relatively quiet performance against Costa’s defense. DeWayne Morris scored 16 points, Jason Shamburg had five rebounds, and Chase Wixom had three assists. ER
