With mayor out of the race, filing deadline to be extended

by Dan Bialek

With Mayor Tim Lilligren deciding not to run for reelection in March 2001, the filing deadline for those wishing to run for Manhattan Beach City Council seats was expected to be extended an additional week.

For weeks the mayor had not stated publicly whether he would run again, as the regular filing deadline of 5 p.m. Dec. 8 drew near. However, at the Manhattan Beach Pier Lighting Ceremony on Saturday, the mayor told the Easy Reader that he did not plan to seek a third term.

"I’m not going to be running this time," Lilligren said after hosting the event. "I want to be able to spend more time with my wife and my 15-month-old daughter."

Because the mayor is an incumbent who could have run for reelection, his decision not to run triggers a one-week extension of the filing deadline under state law.

Applicants have until 5 p.m. Friday, Dec. 15, to file nomination paperwork with the city clerk’s office. Applicants must be at least 18 years old, registered Manhattan Beach voters, and their applications must be accompanied with at least 20 signatures of registered Manhattan Beach voters.

As of Wednesday morning, seven residents have pulled or filed papers for city positions. Incumbents Steve Napolitano and Linda Wilson taken out papers to run for city council seats, as well as Chamber of Commerce Chairman David Simon, and residents Jim Aldinger, Christopher Campbell, and Bill Eisen. City Treasurer Earle Hupp has taken out pulled papers to run for re-election.ER
