About Town - Hermosa Beach

Sand and snow

Once again the city of Hermosa Beach weds two elements that go together so well - winter and sand - in the annual "Sand Snowman Contest" 9 a.m. to noon Saturday at the north side of the pier at shoreline.

"We welcome all sorts of beach paraphernalia and accessories to produce creative, unusual and oftentimes hilarious snowpersons out of the sand," a city press release promises. Participants are urged to bring their own shovels and buckets as well.

Prizes are awarded in five main categories: most Californian, most traditional, funniest, best dressed, and best couple.

In fact, everyone gets a prize, and people of all ages are encouraged to join in.

Sculpting begins at 9 a.m., followed by judging at 11 a.m. and prizes at 11:30 a.m.

For information call 318-0280 or visit the city's community resources office, 710 Pier Ave. at Pacific Coast Highway.

Pause for the Claus

Santa's elves are reminding that Mr. Claus himself will appear at the Pier Plaza promenade for the city's annual tree lighting ceremony 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. today, sponsored by the city of Hermosa Beach and the Hermosa Beach Chamber of Commerce.

Chamber volunteers will be on hand to provide Polaroid photos of Santa with children for a nominal fee, chamber officials said.

The Hermosa Beach Band and Choir will perform Christmas carols and the jazz ensemble Christmas Bones will perform. Snow will be brought in for the event to make it a white Christmas.

Free hot coffee, hot chocolate, hot cider, plus donuts and cookies, will be served by chamber and city volunteers.

While all that is going on, a chamber of commerce mixer will be held for members and nonmembers 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Fat Face Fenner's Fishack, on the restaurant's new outdoor balcony overlooking the plaza.

For information call 318-0280. ER
