Hermosa pier opens for early Halibut presents

by Captain Jack

Happy Pete, Captain Steve and newly weds Captain Kirk and Becky wit Hermosa Sandies.

An early Halibut bite is on from Santa Monica to Hermosa pier! Them sweet meated flatties are moving up on to the shallows in anticipation of the spring fling. That's when the big mommas move in to mate and drop their little egglets inshore. What we have going on here is the males finding their special spot for you know what. They be filling up on anything that has a tail or squid; that candy bait of the sea. They needs to be healthy and strong for momma.

This early bite all started around Thanksgiving week and has only let up with the drop and rise in the barometer. A nice showing of squid in the bay hasn't hurt; with most bait receivers selling what they have to those who can buy. Ya have to have a mixed bag, however, caus'in ya don't know what them boys feel like eating from day to day. One day they likes anchovies, the next it's sardines. On Fridays they likes candy bait. I try to use one of each on a different pole till I finds what's they wants.

All this catching is making Pete from "Petes Just Fishing" located at the foot of the now opened Hermosa Beach Fishing Pier very happy. How happy was Pete?? So happy he closed his shop for a few and took a young newly wed couple from Jersy, who likes to fish, Kirk and Becky, for a fishing tour of the new pier. What they found was Sand Bass a plenty! Pete, bubbling over wit dis happiness, felets the Bass on his counter top in the shop. Then sells Kirk, an eastern sea captain in his own rite, a new rod and reel for Christmas! Don't ya just love the holiday season.

Oh, there's free parking all around the Hermosa Pier and Pete's just dying to see ya. So, come on down for a cup of java, a brew or two, some bait and fish cleaning if'in ya buy sump'tin. AArggg sez the Captain...

Up and down Califrisco it's been Rock Cod. Most folks are filling up their freezers before January when the Fish and No Game shut down Cod fishing for their egg laying. Sand Bass has been spotty. If'in ya can get out to the islands man, Yellow Tail are hitting on squid. A few White Sea Bass have also been showing up for a Season'ed Greeting. Making this holiday season a very merry for those who land a big one or two!!!

The fresh water boys are catching Trout where ever there is cold water and most of the water is cold! Catfish, for those who eats them, are deep; but they is still biting. If'in ya want Striped Bass, Willow Beach is topping the scales with locals at Castaic Lake and Silverwood Lake getting a few after the trout plants.

Down Cabo Wabo way their getting some Marlin, nice Dorado, and Yellowfin. What a way to spend Christmas 80 degree sun, sand, fish and suds in Wabo Land.
