Former UCLA coach John Wooden speaking at the Distinguished Speaker Series in Redondo.

THE WISEMAN OF WESTWOOD: "I had the most powerful ally in the world — the bench." Former UCLA coach John Wooden commenting on how he controlled superstars such as Bill Walton and Lew Alcindor. Wooden was the Distinguished Speaker Series speaker Monday night at the Redondo Beach Performing Arts Center.

MORE WIZARDRY: "Walton told me I didn’t have a right to tell him to cut his hair. I said you’re right. But I have a right to say who plays. We’re going to miss you. Walton got a haircut."

RULES OF THE GAME: "I had only three rules. Be on time. No profanity. Never criticize another player." What would he change if he was coaching today’s millionaire superstars? "Nothing," answered the winner of 10 national championships. Wooden’s salary in 1975, his final year at UCLA: $32,000.

HERMOSA SURVIVOR: A local jogger and aficionado of the Survivor TV show reported a sighting of "cast" member Colleen Haskell at the HB pier on Monday. Survivor-maniacs often described Colleen as "cute" and "the coolest one on the show." She landed a role in Rob Schneider’s upcoming film Animal. The local jogger asked to remain anonymous, fearing that her Survivor addiction would be met with friendly ridicule. "This is so embarrassing," she said…

IRON RESOLVE: Organizers of the annual July 4th "Ironman" paddle and run event, which ends with a front yard chug-a-lug barf-a-thon attended by hundreds, have been watching the HB city council’s moves to control large parties, especially on that rowdiest of holidays. "I’ve been in contact with people who run the Ironman," cackled a source close to the event. "Guess what? They told the council to [bleep] off, they’re going to do it anyway!"

BLIP BLIPPED: "People accuse us of so many things, I think this one will be okay." Manhattan Beach Mayor Tim Lilligren responding to resident Jerry O’Connor’s request to delete Viet Ngo’s derogatory remarks about the city council from the previous council meeting’s minutes.
