Memorial benches vandalized
The city of Manhattan Beach is offering a $1,000 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of whoever vandalized the two Escobar memorial benches along the Strand at 16th Street.
Someone removed the bolts securing the benches, then pushed them into some ivy near the sidewalk sometime Sept. 29 or Sept. 30, police said.
24,000 cigarettes stolen
Two people were videotaped removing boxes from the storeroom of a drugstore on the 1500 block of Rosecrans Avenue on Oct. 9. About 60 cartons of cigarettes were stolen.
Bummer vacation
Two New Zealand tourists left a large quantity of property under a lifeguard tower about 11 a.m. Oct. 9. When they returned a half-hour later their two backpacks, three wetsuits, surfboard, bodyboard, camera, CD player, clothes, shoes, and wallets had been stolen. Total value of all items taken was estimated at $4,522 New Zealand, or $2,261 US.

A man reported his purple bicycle stolen after its chain lock was cut from a pole on the 1100 block of Manhattan Beach Avenue on Oct. 7. Stickers on the bike included such slogans as: "Fly Girls," "Amsterdam Admirals," and "Blue Town."
Invisible bike thief
Three bicycles were removed from an open garage on the 200 block of 44th Street on Oct. 8. No culprit was seen or heard. ER
