Basketball signups
Hermosa Beach Youth Basketball registration continues 12:30 p.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday at Room 8 on the second floor of the city's Community Center, located at the southwest corner of Pier Avenue and Pacific Coast Highway.

The youth basketball program paid for a recent, $7,000 refurbishing of the gym floor in the Community Center, and awards $200 savings bonds to 8th grade players who demonstrate academic excellence in school.
The program raises money in part by selling banner space inside the gym.
Chamber mixer
Local businesspeople and the Hermosa Beach chamber of Commerce will mix and mingle 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 19 at Patrick Molloy's, 50-A Pier Ave. on the plaza. Molloy's will serve samplings from its new menu, and a no-host bar will be available.
Chamber members and prospective members get in free; others must fork over a $5 donation at the door.
Blood sucker
The Community Center Foundation holds its annual fund-raiser, working with the Hermosa Beach Playhouse to present a VIP preview of "Dracula," on Sunday.
The evening, dubbed "Marvelous Macabre Gala," will begin at 5 p.m. and will include a preview party with no-host bar and a live auction with civic light opera impresario James Blackman as auctioneer.
Proceeds of the event will go toward a new sound system for the playhouse on Pier Avenue at Pacific Coast Highway.
