MB score well again on API

MB score well again on API

by Dan Bialek

After placing in the state's top 10 percent on the 1999 Academic Performance Index Report, Manhattan Beach's public schools continued to do well again this year.

Almost all schools saw improvement in their API results, except Manhattan Beach Middle School. However, the school's score of 881 was still well above average, which Principal Janet Schwabe credited to diligence on the part of parents students.

"We have wonderful parents that really take an interest in their children's education," she said. "And we have great, hardworking kids. They rarely come to school without doing their homework, and that makes all the difference."

Mira Costa High School posted a seven point increase. Principal Lynn McCormack expressed enthusiasm about this year's scores and the prospect of even higher ones next year.

"I am very pleased that we exceeded our target growth in all areas. Our main goal is to maximize achievement for all of our learners," she said. "We have some solid programs in place, and we could see as much as a 20 point increase next year."

Robinson Elementary School posted the highest score, 929, and points gain, 46, of all Manhattan Beach schools. ER
