Sea Hawk talk
Football (4-0): Edged previously unbeaten Beverly Hills 13-7 last Thursday in Bay League opener. The undersized Redondo defense came through again, stopping the Normans' power running game most of the night. The Hawks gave up a long scoring run to the burly Roger Smith in the first quarter, but withstood every scoring thrust thereafter. Leading 13-7 on the strength of scoring runs from QB Christopher Coleman and RB Eddie Topps, Redondo's defense made its last stand in the game's closing seconds. A fourth-down Beverly Hills pass attempt from the Redondo eight yard line with 38 seconds remaining was broken up by DB Keith Ellison and intercepted by LB John Canteo to seal the win. Coleman led the Redondo offense, completing 15 of 19 passes for 240 yards. Next: at home versus Culver City Friday at 7 p.m.

Mustang round-up
Football (3-1): Dominated Leuzinger 35-16 last Thursday, avenging a 52-7 loss from last year. The Mustangs, who passed sparingly in their win versus South one week before, did most of their damage through the air, as the J.R. Martinez to Morgan Ralls combo hooked up for four touchdowns. Two of the scores came in the first quarter, sandwiched around a 12-yard Michael Okwo scoring run, as the Mustangs built a 21-0 advantage. Costa extended its lead against the Olympians to 35-8 in the fourth quarter on two more long scoring passes to Ralls, who finished with eight catches for 253 yards. Martinez threw for 323 yards. The defense, meanwhile, dominated the line of scrimmage and completely shut down the vaunted misdirection of Leuzinger's Double Wing-T offense. Linebackers Okwo and Nick Wynand turned in astounding performances, combining for 43 tackles. The defensive line also excelled. "It's hard to single out guys," said defensive coordinator Ray Lee. "The entire defense really played well." Next: at Hawthorne (2-2) Friday at 7 p.m.
Girls' Volleyball (10-0): Destroyed Culver City 3-0 last Wednesday. Jamie Grass and Kristin Nelson had six kills each for Costa, which bageled the Centaurs in the first game. Won Nike Challenge in Chicago over the weekend. See accompanying story. Gave up a total of eight points in 3-0 win at West Torrance Tuesday. Kristen Anderson and Erin Manly played well for Costa.
Girls' Tennis (9-1): Smashed Culver City 17-1 last Thursday. Freshman singles player Stephanie Manasse won her three sets at love. Doubled Redondo 12-6 Monday. The doubles teams of Megan Malinsky-Kelly Finnerty and Megan McConnell-Jenna Schaeffer recorded sweeps. Blanked Inglewood 18-0 Tuesday.
Boys' Water Polo (6-4): Crushed Fullerton 13-1 last Wednesday. Chris Drum and Dan Weber scored three goals apiece for Costa. Netted 16-7 win over South Pasadena Tuesday, led by Tyler Krikorian's five goals.
