A teenage boy walked up to a man in a parking lot on the 1800 block of Hawthorne Boulevard about 7 p.m. The boy demanded the man's cell phone and whatever was in his pockets. The victim didn't see whether or not the young man had a weapon, but handed over his phone and his cash. A third man, who had seen the incident, approached the robber and took back the phone. The outnumbered crook then fled, taking the victim's cash with him.
Bumper cars
A man driving a white Pontiac on Avenue E backed into a woman in a red BMW and tried to drive off without leaving his insurance information. The woman followed him in her car east on Avenue E and then south on Juanita. When she got within 30 feet of his car, the man slammed on his brakes, causing her car to collide with his. Witnesses said the accident appeared to have been caused on purpose. The man was arrested and is being charged with assault with a deadly weapon.
Drop the Chihuahua
Brownie and Sparky, a pair of tiny Chihuahua puppies, were stolen from a car parked in a lot on the 1800 block of Hawthorne Boulevard. The pint-sized purebreds were less than three months old and were worth $1,300 each, reported their owner. She had left the dogs in her 1993 Nissan Sentra for a little more than an hour with the window slightly open. When she came back, she couldn't find hide nor hair of the bug-eyed pooches. A dog napper apparently forced down the open window, scooped up the pups and ran with his tail between his legs.
Breaking tom
A woman, was sleeping in her apartment on the 1700 block of Camino de la Costa, when a little after midnight, she heard a noise in her bathroom. Thinking she'd rather scare off any intruders than meet them face to face, she turned on her radio. When she ventured into the bathroom, she found the window screen was torn. Further investigation revealed that part of a back fence had also recently been broken.
Indecent exposure
A woman was walking down the 2200 block of Ripley Avenue around 10 a.m. when a man shouted at her. When she turned around to see what he was yelling about, he pulled down his pants and revealed that he was stimulating himself. She ran up the street and found a city yard worker who accompanied her back to the scene. But the man had vanished, in a flash. ER
