Popping and locking
Someone stole $60 cash and a cell phone valued at $200 from a 1972 Volkswagen bug as it sat in the municipal parking structure on Hermosa Avenue, police said. The car's owner, a Lawndale man, said he had left the windows open a bit because of the heat.
"I believe they reached in and popped the lock," the man wrote in a police report.
Unlucky swim
A Torrance man came down to Hermosa for an early afternoon ocean swim just north of the city pier, and while he was in the water someone swiped his $100 cell phone.
"I left my cell phone on my towel and went for a swim. I returned approximately 20 minutes later to find my cell phone missing," the man wrote in a report to police.
"I did not observe anyone near my towel. However, I was not watching the entire time," he concluded.
Man arrested
Police confronted a man as he was getting into a car on Hermosa Avenue at night and arrested him for allegedly peeping into some homes and possessing stolen property.
Police were in the area responding to reports of a prowler, and when they confronted the man he told them he was on probation for selling marijuana, according to a police report. He also told officers that he had come to the area to visit a friend but was unable to give the exact location of the friend's house, the report stated.
The two people who had complained of a prowler were brought to the scene and identified the man as the culprit, police said. He gave officers permission to search the car he was driving and nothing was found amiss, although officers could not search the trunk because the man did not have the trunk key.
The man was taken to the police station, issued a citation and allowed to leave. He returned with the key to the car's trunk, and officers looked inside and found some items stolen from a Hermosa apartment, police said.
Car stolen
Someone stole a man's 1994 Chevrolet pickup truck as it sat parked in a Prospect Avenue garage, police said. Also stolen was about $900 worth of golf equipment that was inside the truck. ER
