A Manhattan Beach resident was rushed to Little Company of Mary Hospital Tuesday night after he collapsed at the podium while addressing the Manhattan Beach City Council.
Kam Wong of 1130 Ronda Drive, who appeared to be in his early '70s, was speaking to council members about a planned 57,000-square-foot office building development on Sepulveda Boulevard near his home when he was stricken. He fell backwards, striking his head against the chairs in the first row of the council chambers. Fire chief Dennis Groat said that Wong suffered a massive heart attack.
Dr. Joe Devine, an anesthesiologist who spoke moments before on the same issue, attended to Wong until paramedics arrived. Paramedics were able to get Wong's heart into a weak but regular rhythm before transporting him to Little Company. His condition was not known as of press time.
After paramedics removed Wong from council chambers, the council continued with the meeting. ER
