South Bay Olympians

come home with heads high

Besides Eric Fonoimoana, no other South Bay Olympians were able to medal in their respective sports, but they all competed hard and represented their countries and the South Bay very well.

In beach volleyball, Holly McPeak (Manhattan Beach) and her partner Misty May placed fifth, matching McPeak's performance with Nancy Reno in Atlanta four years earlier. McPeak/May advanced to the quarterfinals last Thursday, needing seven match points to pull out a tough 15-13 win over an Italian pair. But the fourth-seeded Americans fell to eventual bronze medal winners Adriana Samuel and Sandra Pires of Brazil 16-14 in a Saturday quarterfinal.

"That was definitely our game to win and we lost it," said a disappointed McPeak. "Our game is to go out, go after them and out pressure on them. We didn't do that."

On the men's side, gold medal favorites Jose Loiola (Manhattan Beach) and Emanuel Rego (Redondo Beach), playing for Brazil, were upset by the 10th seeded team, Javier Bosma and Fabio Diez of Spain, 17-16 in the second round. They settled for a tie for ninth place.

Meanwhile, Rob Heidger (Redondo Beach) and Kevin Wong, perhaps the Games' most fortunate participants, advanced to the quarterfinals despite just one win in three matches when their Mexican opponents forfeited on Friday due to injury. But their luck ran out against Fonoimoana and his partner Dain Blanton in the quarterfinals Sunday. The eventual gold medalists trounced Heidger/Wong 15-3 Sunday, relegating them to a tie for fifth place.

In tennis, Jeff Tarango (Manhattan Beach) was a second round victim, falling 6-2, 6-3 to Argentine Mariano Zabaleta in singles action on Friday.

"It's unfortunate," Tarango told the Associated Press. "I was the last man standing. I would have liked to carry it a little further."

Finally, in the two-man, 1,000-meter kayak event on Tuesday, U.S. flagbearer Cliff Meidl of Redondo Beach, competing with Phillipe Boccara, could not advance beyond the first heat.

"My chances of winning a medal were very difficult," Meidl told the Associated Press. "I would've loved to get to the semis. But the entire experience has been very good for me."
