Police open house
Come learn a little more about Redondo's boys and girls in blue. The 6th Annual Community Safety Fair and Redondo Beach Police Department Open House will be held at the Redondo Beach City Hall complex Sunday, Oct. 1. Tours of police headquarters, displays of police equipment, dog-officer teams and SWAT team demonstrations will all be part of the fun. A free barbeque will also be provided. Domestic violence forum
The Beach Cities Health District, along with the 1736 Family Crisis Center and other community agencies, are holding a community forum to help break the chain of domestic violence. Testimony from survivors and community leaders will be followed by a candle light vigil as a memorial to those who died of domestic violence. The "Voices and Vigil" takes place Monday, October 2 at Legacy Restaurant, at 1701 Catalina Ave. in Redondo Beach, from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. Free.
Register to vote
The Redondo Beach City Clerk's office is staying open late to Tuesday, Oct. 10, for those get-it-in-under-the-wire voters out there. Tuesday is the last day to register to vote in the presidential general election this November. The Clerk's office is located at 415 Diamond St. and can be reached at (310) 318-0656.
Standing ovation?
The South Bay Civic Light Opera received eight nominations from the Los Angeles Theatre League Alliance's "Ovation" awards, the local little brother to Broadway's "Tony" Awards. Their Production of the "The King and I" pulled in one nomination, while "Dreamgirls" earned seven, including Best Production, Best Director, Best Lean Man, Best Lead Woman and Best Musical(large theater).
Literacy first
Bring a blanket, picnic dinner and a good book for each person to read and come down to the second annual Redondo Reads. The literacy party will take place Thursday, Oct. 5 from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at all elementary school sites in the Redondo Beach Unified School District.
Potluck benefit
Artists by the Sea is staging a benefit to help Redondo's homeless. Wednesday, Oct. 4, from 7:30 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. at 1564 N. International Boardwalk in the Redondo Beach Harbor. A raffle and auction of artwork is planned. Donations go to the "Matthew Shepard Fund" and the Redondo Beach homeless. Call (310) 406-8178 for more information.
Lobster fest
Redondo's annual festival of all that is lobster kicks off Friday, Oct. 13 and runs through Sunday, Oct. 15. Lee Rocker, The Nelsons, Dave Mason and Chuck Negron (formerly of Three Dog Night) will be performing. A three-day pass providing admission all weekend and one lobster dinner are available for $30.
