Football (2-0): Stomped North Torrance 25-7 on the road Friday. The Sea Hawks continued their terrific defense to start the season, stifling the Saxons (1-1) the entire game until they scored a meaningless touchdown with three seconds left. The defense, which was not scored on during last week's rout of Torrance, gave up just one first down in the opening half as Redondo built a 16-0 lead at the break. The Sea Hawks also got a huge night from senior placekicker Dustin Zamboni, who booted four field goals, three from over 40 yards. A scoring run by Eddie Topps and a four-yard Christopher Coleman to Keith Ellison toss for a touchdown completed the scoring. Next: at home versus Orange Friday at 7 p.m.

Football (1-1): Fell to Warren (Downey) 28-14 on the road Friday. Sparked by the return of QB J.R. Martinez, the Mustangs rolled to a 14-0 first quarter lead over the Bears (1-1) on the strength of a 54-yard pass from Martinez to TE Nick Wynand and a short scoring plunge from FB Greg Sabo. But the rest of the night belonged to Warren, which scored twice in the second quarter and tacked on two more scores in the second half for the final victory margin. Martinez finished the game with 205 passing yards. Next: at South Torrance Friday at 7 p.m.

Area Olympians fare well
South Bay beach volleyball players Holly McPeak, Eric Fonoimoana, Jose Loiola and Emanuel Rego all won their opening round matches at the Olympic Games in Sydney, Australia. McPeak (Manhattan Beach) teamed with Misty May to upend the Czech team of Martina Hudcova and Tereza Tobiasova 15-5 in just 22 minutes Saturday morning. They face an Italian team today in an elimination match. Fonoimoana (Hermosa Beach), playing with Dain Blanton of Laguna Beach, hammered their German counterparts, Oliver Oetke and Andreas Scheurepflug, 15-7 Sunday, avenging two earlier international defeats to the duo. Fonoimoana/Blanton advanced to the round of 16 today, along with the Brazilian team of Loiola (Manhattan Beach) and Rego (Redondo Beach). The gold medal favorites smashed an Australian team 15-3. On Friday, Fonoi/Blanton face a Norwegian team, while Loiola/Rego square off against a tandem from Spain.
The only South Bay volleyballer to lose was Redondo Beach's Rob Heidger. Teaming with Kevin Wong, they lost a heartbreaker Sunday to a Canadian team 17-15 in a match where the Americans led 14-9 and had six match points. Heidger/Wong rebounded with an impressive 20-minute win, 15-2, in an elimination match played Tuesday morning. They followed that up with a tough 15-11 loss to an Australian team Tuesday afternoon, but were fortunate to advance to the round of 16 as the "lucky loser." Heidger/Wong meet a team from Mexico Friday with an all-US quarterfinal Sunday should both American teams advance.
