The city council on Tuesday approved an expansion of the soccer field at the soon-to-be-revamped Valley Park, giving an overflowing youth soccer program its second regulation field within Hermosa Beach.
Construction is expected to begin in spring 2001 on the park's facelift. Workers will replace the dingy public restroom building and much of the park's play equipment, decrease the size of the south end fire pit, add new picnic tables and benches, resurface the basketball area, and expand the soccer field, adding better drainage.
In other matters, the council scheduled a special meeting Thursday, Sept. 28 to discuss neighbors' complaints of noise from patrons leaving Pier Plaza bars, and to take up the thorny topic of Hermosa's rowdy, unofficial Fourth of July celebrations.
The council also agreed to study the feasibility of wresting the local library away from Los Angeles County. Local officials have long been asking the county to increase the operating hours of the cozy library at Pier Avenue and Valley Drive, which is open 35 hours a week. ER
