ABOUT TOWN

MANHATTAN BEACH - About Town

Arts Fest Sunday

The Manhattan Beach Arts Festival fills the streets of downtown Manhattan Beach Sunday, Sept. 10, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sponsored by the Cultural Arts Division and local businesses, the free, hands-on cultural event will include art-making workshops, entertainment and dancing for children and adults. Food will be for sale. The Festival will close three downtown blocks: Manhattan Beach Boulevard between Valley Drive and Highland Avenue, and Morningside Drive between 12th and 11th streets. The event drew 8,000 people downtown last year. Call 802-5417 for more information.

Schools are open; drive carefully

With schools now open, including the newly modernized Pennekamp School, the Manhattan Beach Police Department reminds everyone that school-age children are over-represented in pedestrian/motor vehicle accidents. Please remember that speed limits in school zones are 25 miles an hour. Also remember that cars moving in both directions must stop when a school bus is displaying a flashing red light signal or a stop signal arm.

Champagne Brunch Sept. 17

The Manhattan Beach Sister City Committee will hold its 15th Annual Champagne Brunch Sunday, Sept. 17, from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at 821 Eighth Street, Manhattan Beach. Music, great food, prizes and friendly folks amply compensate you for the $12 donation. To make reservations, call 374-6003 or 374-7623.

MB unveils website

The city of Manhattan Beach recently unveiled its refurbished website at www.ci.manhattan-beach.ca.us. The site includes everything the old site had - city council agendas, budgets, community calendar, etc. - plus popular landmark photos and a virtual tour of the city.

Book drive for juveniles

The Los Angeles County Children's Court, which handles all cases of child abuse and neglect in the county, is embarking on a new project to make books available for children of all ages. The idea is to have books for children and their caretakers to read while waiting for their cases, and then to take a book home with them when their cases are concluded. The court needs books that are in good condition, both in English and Spanish, for children of all ages. The books may be dropped off care of councilmember Joyce Fahey, a part-time children's court judge, at the Office of the Manhattan Beach City Manager at the Manhattan Beach City Hall, 1400 Highland Avenue, Manhattan Beach.
