Port Call Hermosa Beach

The USS Elliot, a Naval Destroyer, will anchor off Hermosa Beach coast. This is the city's first Port Call in 70 years. Celebration begins at 7 p.m., Hermosa Beach Pier Plaza. 318-0280

Hoops

The registration deadline is today for the Manhattan Beach Parks & Recreation Department "3 on 3" Basketball Tournament. The tournament is being held Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 16-17 beginning at 9 a.m. at Live Oak Park (1901 Valley Dr.). The Palos Verdes Concours d'Elegance will have a tour of new exclusive homes, designer fashion shows, jazz concerts, art exhibitions, food and wine tasting, and new car exhibits from 11 a.m-3 p.m; and an annual invitational classic car show on Sunday, September 10 from 10 a.m. - 4 p.m. $40 adult or $60 for both Saturday and Sunday. Glass menagerie

Equal rights

American Association of University Women (AAUW) is a not-for-profit national advocacy organization that promotes equity for all women and girls. The Manhattan Beach branch's welcome breakfast meeting is open to any South Bay resident with a college degree who supports these ideals. This annual meeting will be held at The Lakes, El Segundo. Become a docent

Whole Foods in Torrance is hosting this fun, interactive class to show how easy it is to prepare and enjoy healthy food. Eliminate your waste

Los Angeles County workers will take over the disposal of area residents' household hazardous wastes for free 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 30 at the Lawndale Public Works Department, 4722 Manhattan Beach Blvd., between Inglewood Avenue and Hawthorne Boulevard in Lawndale.

Area residents may bring as much as 15 gallons or 125 pounds of materials such as motor oil, oil filters, brake fluid, paint, thinner, turpentine, pesticides, herbicides, and household or auto batteries.

Residents are advised to bring the materials in a sturdy box that they won't want back and to refrain from mixing any materials together.

The hazardous waste roundup does not accept explosives, ammunition, radioactive waste, business waste, ordinary trash or tires.
