Kiraly, Johnson reign in rain

Karch Kiraly and Adam Johnson found the winner's circle for the first time in 2000, taking the Paul Mitchell AVP Virginia Beach Open beach volleyball tournament between thunderstorms Sunday. Kiraly, who took the previous two weeks off to nurse a groin injury, and Johnson won the double final 6-2 over the surging team of Brent Frohoff (Manhattan Beach) and rookie Larry Witt, who have five consecutive top-seven finishes.

Canyon Ceman (Hermosa Beach) and Mike Whitmarsh, winners last week in New Jersey, placed third.

The AVP takes two weeks off before returning to the sand Aug. 18-20 at Seal Beach. The Manhattan Beach Open is Aug. 25-27.

Ensberg on a tear

Hermosa Beach native Morgan Ensberg continues to shine in the minor leagues. As of Sunday, the Round Rock Express (AA-Texas League) third baseman led all Houston Astros farmhands with 21 home runs. He also had driven in 69 runs and his average had inched above .300. With Houston 3B Ken Caminiti contemplating retirement, Ensberg, 25, has an outside shot to be the Astros' starter at third to open the 2001 season.

Cohen's an ace

Twelve-year-old Manhattan Beach boy Brandon Cohen had the thrill of a lifetime last week at The Lakes golf course in El Segundo. The seventh grader at the Manhattan Beach Middle School used a five-wood from 170 yards to ace the par-three third hole.
