ABOUT TOWN- Manhattan Beach

Wilson is queen

Emma Wilson, a fourth grader at Pacific Elementary School in Manhattan Beach, was awarded the title of Miss Junior America City Queen for Manhattan Beach. The selection is based on academic achievement, extra curricular activities, interview skills and poise. Emma is a straight "A" student who plays the violin and piano, dances tap, jazz and ballet, sings in the choir and loves to play basketball. Emma will compete for the national title of Miss Junior America-Pre Teen with girls from all over the country in Anaheim this month.

Jazz at Polliwog August 6

The Afro/Cuban jazz sounds of the Bobby Matos Jazz Ensemble fill Polliwog Park on Sunday August 6 at 5 p.m. as part of the Concerts in the Park series. The concert, like the others that follow every Sunday through Sept. 3, are free.

Book drive for juveniles

The Los Angeles County Children's Court, which handles all cases of child abuse and neglect in the county, is embarking upon a new project to make books available for children of all ages. The idea is to have books for children and their caretakers to read while waiting for their cases, and then to take a book home with them when their cases are concluded. The Court needs books that are in good condition, both in English and Spanish, for children of all ages. The books may be dropped off care of councilmember Joyce Fahey, a part-time children's court judge, at the Office of the Manhattan Beach City Manager at the Manhattan Beach City Hall, 1400 Highland Avenue, Manhattan Beach.
