About Town: Hermosa Beach

Aloha, everyone

The Aloha Days Surf Contest and Festival returns to Hermosa Beach for a fourth year Saturday and Sunday, Aug. 12 and Aug. 13.

Thousands are expected to show up for the contest and festival, which includes ethnic food and continuous Polynesian, Hawaiian and Tahitian dancing in the Pier Plaza area.

Once again, Australians will compete with a USA team in a rowing event on Sunday.

The open competitions in longboard, shortboard and bodyboard require registration fees of $35, or $20 for people 16 and younger.

Jazzy, jazzy

The Guys From Ipanema will perform this evening on the Pier Plaza, as part of a free series put together by South Bay jazz ambassador Ozzie Cadena.

Featured in the show 5 to 9 p.m. will be singer Gretchen Parlato, guitarist Marcel Camargo, bassist Pablo Motta, percussionist Marcel Adjibi and flutist Evan Frances Chavez.

In addition, a "bon voyage salute" will be held 6 to 9 p.m. at Patrick Malloy's on the Pier Plaza for Nick Esposito, a local jazz lover who served as the Lighthouse Café's first doorman in 1949. Esposito died last month.

Performing Thursday, Aug. 10 on the Pier Plaza will be the Isaiah Ceccarelli Trio.
