Standoff in North Redondo ends quietly
Hawthorne police cornered a murder suspect and alleged Lennox gang member Thursday in a Redondo Beach house on the 1700 block of Steinhart Avenue.
The man, Steve Alvarez, 21, gave up around 5 a.m. Friday morning after a SWAT team filled the house with tear gas. Alvarez was wanted in connection with the shooting Tuesday of Anneliz Lati Mola, a passenger in a car that ventured into Lennox neighborhood controlled by Latino gang members, say police. Gang members chased the car and fired at the car, hitting Mola, who was not involved with any gang. She died Friday when family members decided to turn off life support machines.
Police located Alvarez at the home of a female friend Thursday. Redondo Beach Police cordoned off the area around the house and evacuated five nearby homes.
Hawthorne officers convinced the friend, who was inside with Alvarez to leave the house. Repeated attempts to contact Alvarez by phone and bullhorn were unsuccessful. In the early hours of the morning, police set off a small explosive to keep him awake. Alvarez surrendered shortly after sunrise when officers used teargas. ER
