Ceman, Whitmarsh rule New Jersey

Canyon Ceman (Hermosa Beach) and new partner Mike Whitmarsh made their second week together in 2000 a successful one, taking the Sunkist AVP Belmar Open beach volleyball tournament with a 15-11 win over Nick Hannemann (Hermosa Beach) and Adam Jewell Sunday in Belmar, N.J. The win was the first for Whitmarsh in 2000 and his fourth consecutive at Belmar. He and Ceman won the event in 1997. Hannemann and Jewell beat Brent Doble and Stein Metzger 15-12 in the loser's bracket finals to advance to their first-ever AVP finals. They battled gamely, but were defeated by a fresher, more experienced team.

Pianalto can't cut it - Woods can and does

Anna Pianalto failed to make the cut at the U.S. Women's Open golf tournament played over the weekend in Gurnee, Ill. The 29-year-old Hermosa Beach resident, who qualified for the Open by finishing second in a sectional qualifying event, shot 83-89 over the demanding par-72 layout. Karrie Webb of Australia won the event by five strokes.

Meanwhile, at St. Andrews, Scotland, part-time Manhattan Beach resident Tiger Woods showed why he is the best male golfer ever. He registered an eight-stroke win over the world's best golfers at the British Open Sunday to claim the career Grand Slam at the age of 24. His 19-under total was the best in Grand Slam history. He also owns Grand Slam scoring records in the Master's with his 18-under in 1998, when he won by 12 strokes, and with last month's 12-under at the U.S. Open at Pebble Beach, where he swamped the field by 15 strokes.

Grass and Zartman are national champs

Rising seniors Jamie Grass (Mira Costa, Manhattan Beach) and Chrissie Zartman (Bishop Montgomery, Hermosa Beach) teamed to capture the Gold Medal Sunday in the 17s Division of the USA Volleyball Beach Jr. Olympics held at Imperial Beach in San Diego. They won the national title, beating a San Diego duo 15-2 in the final. The win earned Grass and Zartman a spot on the USA Volleyball Beach Jr. National Team.
