If campaign contributions are a measure of political success, then the 36th Congressional race between incumbent Steve Kuykendall and challenger Jane Harman will be as close as pundits picked it when Harman first announced her candidacy.
At the end of
June Harman had raised $1,206,135, versus Kuykendall's $1,138,530. But the primary
election cost Kuykendall over half of his war chest, leaving him $543,024 at
the end of June. Harman, who spent little in the primary, had $850,184 available
at the end of June.
Both candidates are expected to raise another $1 mililon before the race is
over. Because it is one of six races nationwide which will determine the Congressional
majority, both parties are expected to contribute heavily to their candidates
.
According to the Center for Responsive Politics, contributions from the beach cities, have been modest. As of the end of June, Kuykendall's contributions in excess of $200 from Hermosa Beach totaled $3,000, from Manhattan Beach $10,850, and from Redondo Beach $5,450.
Harman's contributions in excess of $200 from Hermosa Beach were less than $2,500, from Manhattan Beach $8,160 and from Redondo Beach $4,000.
