Surf Festival and Health Fair hits South Bay this weekend

The Beach Cities Health District's International Surf Festival and Health Fair, takes center stage on the beaches of Hermosa, Manhattan and Redondo Aug. 3-6. One beach or ocean event after another marks the Thursday through Sunday festival, highlighted by the zany six-man/six-woman volleyball tournament in Manhattan Beach, and the Wieland Shield Competition, which pits America's best lifeguards against an Australian all-star team in the "Ocean Olympics" Aug. 3-4.

Wieland Shield Competition, 10 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 3, Hermosa Beach Pier; and 7 p.m. Friday, Aug. 4, Redondo Beach at Avenue C.
L.A. County Lifeguard Championships, 7 p.m. Friday, Aug. 4, Redondo Beach at Avenue C.
Western Region Surfing Championships, 6:30 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 5, Manhattan Beach at 45th Street. Males and females of all ages. Pre-register by Aug. 3 for $20 by calling (310) 372-8442. Registering on sand is $25.
International Bodysurfing Championships, 7:15 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 5, north side of Manhattan Beach Pier. Eleven age groups. Pre-register by Aug. 2 for $15 by calling (310) 545-8318. Registering on sand is $20.
Dick Fitzgerald Two-Mile Beach Run, 8 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 5, Hermosa Beach Pier. Eleven age groups for each gender. Pre-register by July 28 for $15 by calling (310) 831-2593. Registering on sand is $20. Entries will be accepted until 7:30 a.m. the day of the run
Six-Man/Six-Woman Volleyball Tournament, 9 a.m. Saturday and Sunday, Aug. 5-6, Manhattan Beach Pier volleyball courts. Deadline is Aug. 3 at 5 p.m. $125 per team. For more info., call (310) 802-5413.
Southern California Lifeguard Championships, 7 p.m. Saturday Aug. 5, Redondo Beach at Avenue C. Come see if the South Bay lifeguards can defend their title and once again ring the Taplin Bell.
Velzy-Stevens Pier-to-Pier Paddleboard Championship, 7:15 a.m. Sunday, Aug. 6, starts at Manhattan Beach Pier and ends at Hermosa Beach Pier. Ten classes. Enter for $15 by July 28. A limited number of entries accepted on race day with a late charge. Call (310) 965-8527 for entry information.
