McPeak, May win in Germany

Manhattan Beach resident Holly McPeak and partner Misty May came from behind to post a 7-12, 12-2, 12-8 win over an Australian team Sunday to win the Women's Germany Open international beach volleyball tournament. It was the second FIVB win in a row for McPeak and May and their third straight title counting the BVA tournament in Seal Beach last week.

With the win, McPeak and May overtook Liz Masakayan and Elaine Youngs for the second place ranking in the competition for a spot on the U.S. Olympic team. Masakayan-Youngs finished in a tie for 17th place. Jennifer Johnson Jordan and Annett Davis, who finished in a tie for fifth place, currently hold down the top spot. Local favorites Lisa Arce (Redondo Beach) and Barbra Fontana (Manhattan Beach) tied for 13th place in the Olympic team selection standings.

Holdren, Rogers take two

Dax Holdren (Redondo Beach) and Todd Rogers won the Sunkist AVP Muskegon Open beach volleyball tournament Sunday in Muskegon, Michigan, becoming the first team to win twice on the AVP Tour this season. Holdren-Rogers knocked off Lee LeGrande and Franco Neto (Redondo Beach) 15-8 in the final. Muskegon saw the formation of several new teams. The team of Canyon Ceman (Hermosa Beach) and Brian Lewis, who won in Huntington Beach earlier this year, dissolved. Ceman joined with Mike Whitmarsh, while Lewis picked up David Swatik (Hermosa Beach). Ceman-Whitmarsh nabbed a fourth-place finish. Lewis-Swatik settled for a tie for ninth place. Other new teams included Adam Jewell and Adam Johnson (Karch Kiraly was injured), Ian Clark and Matt Unger and Kevin Martin and Mark Kerins. Only the last pair had any success, finishing in a tie for ninth.

Zartman hat trick

Hermosa Beach resident Chrissie Zartman, a senior-to-be at Bishop Montgomery High School, and her partner Tracy Lindquist claimed their third straight AAA beach volleyball title, going undefeated through seven matches to win the Women's AAA Beach Volleyball Tournament Saturday at Will Rogers State Beach in Santa Monica.
