AVP gold for LeGrande-Neto

FIVB gold for McPeak-May

The Ford AVP Karch Kiraly Classic in Long Beach over the weekend was missing top beach volleyball duos Jose Loiola-Emmanuel Rego and Eric Fonoimoana-Dain Blanton. And the team of Karch Kiraly-Adam Johnson was forced to withdraw after Kiraly pulled a groin muscle a few points into the winner’s bracket semifinal Sunday morning. But that didn’t stop the high-flying pros from waging one of the best finals this year. The relatively new team of Lee LeGrande and Franco Neto (Redondo Beach by way of Brazil) fought their way through the winner’s bracket and then came back from down 14-6 in the final against Dax Holdren (Redondo Beach) and Todd Rogers to win 17-15 and take their first AVP title.

Meanwhile, Loiola-Rego placed third in the FIVB tournament in Norway. The team of Fonoimoana (Hermosa Beach) and Blanton, suspended from the AVP for signing up for an international event next week in Italy without the AVP’s permission, finished in a tie for ninth place.

American women also had success internationally as Holly McPeak (Manhattan Beach) and Misty May won the FIVB 2000 Oldsmobile Chicago Grand Slam in Chicago on the Fourth of July. The second-seeded Americans upset the top-seeded Brazilian team of Adriana Behar and Shelda Bede 15-12 for their first FIVB world tour title.

McPeak and May made it two in a row last weekend in Seal Beach. They upended Lisa Arce (Redondo Beach) and Barbra Fontana (Manhattan Beach) 15-4 to win the Beach Volleyball America Seal Beach event. Annett Davis and Jennifer Johnson Jordan finished third.

Local kids excel at AAU National Championships

Rising Mira Costa sophomore Jordan Morris teamed with Jacob Velasquez from Sacramento to win the 16-and-under division of the AAU Junior Beach Volleyball National Championships Sunday in Hermosa Beach. Morris, the son of actor Phil Morris (Jackie Chiles of Seinfeld fame), and Velasquez outlasted the taller team from Thousand Oaks by running them all over the court and then finding open sand with dinks and floaters.

The Hermosa Beach team of Robert Jones and Jason Moore outlasted the Redondo Beach team of Ron Beck and Jason Saunders to win the 18-and-under division. Manhattan Beach’s Kevin Craig and Jason Palacios won the 12-and-under division, while Matt Updike (Manhattan Beach) and Jason Mirick (Playa del Rey) defeated Matt Grote (Manhattan Beach) and Vaun Lennon in the 10-and-under class. Hermosa Beach volleyballers Colton Chalker and Michael Paul finished second in the 14-and-under division.

In the girls’ divisions, three Mira Costa players took silver medals for second place. Rising junior Keegan Featherstone and her amazing jump serve teamed with Carrie Frash (Manhattan Beach) to place second in the 18-and-under division. Sophomore to be Lauren Holland and Chadwick’s Laura Murphy (Manhattan Beach) finished second in the 16-and-under division, while incoming freshman Kristen Jackson teamed with Marissa Watson (Manhattan Beach) to take second in the 14-and-under division. Taylor Carico and Kelsey Grote of Manhattan Beach upended fellow Manhattanites Rachel Short and Ellison Thomas to win the 12-and-under crown.

Lotesto takes 5K

Redondo Beach resident Sharon Lotesto, 49, won the women’s 5K race Sunday at the 7th Annual Keep LA Running 5K Walk & Run, 10K Run and 10/20 mile Bike Cruise at Dockweiler Beach in Playa del Rey. Her winning time of 20:03 was 14 seconds faster than second place finisher Jane Lieberman of Hermosa Beach. Redondo Beach resident Jeff Atkinson, a 1988 Olympian, ran the 10K race, finishing three minutes behind the winner, John Moss of Pasadena.

Local cyclists race down under

Three local bicycle riders recently completed the 2000 New South Wales RTA "Big Ride" annual event in Australia. Raising $225,000 for the Multiple Sclerosis Society, Redondo Beach residents Carl and Lorna Pedersen, owners of Beach Cities Cycle and Pacer Darts of Hermosa Beach, and Hermosa Beach resident Jack Hudgens joined 1350 other cyclists from around the world in the 16-day ride, covering 700 miles, from Brisbane to Sydney.
