Hermosa Beach - Police Beat

Disappearing backpack

A Fullerton woman left her backpack with a friend at a table inside a Pier Plaza establishment about 9:30 p.m. on the Fourth of July, she reported to police.

When the woman returned from the restroom she saw the backpack on the table, but didn’t see her friend. She walked about 30 paces away to look for the friend, and when she turned back toward the table she saw that the backpack was gone as well.

Missing with the backpack were a $200 cell phone, a portable radio, the woman’s checkbook and her wallet with one credit card.

Bye, Mickey

A woman placed her fresh laundry and groceries on the sidewalk briefly when she returned to her Loma Drive home about 11 a.m. Sunday, and when she came back outside the laundry was gone.

Her report to police described the missing laundry in detail; one of the items was a Mickey Mouse T-shirt depicting the character "with hands in pockets."

The culprit or culprits did not swipe the groceries, which included French bread and tissues.

Samaritan battered

A man was attacked by three people and kicked in the head after he used his body to cover another battery victim who had fallen to the pavement outside a Pier Plaza bar about 11 p.m. Wednesday, June 28, police said.

Officers arrested three suspects shortly after the incident.

No serious injuries were reported.

The Samaritan was treated by paramedics at the scene, and he told authorities he would seek any further medical attention on his own.

Surf shop smashed

Someone smashed the front window of a local surf shop and made off with more than $3,100 worth of merchandise as a burglar alarm wailed away.

The theft occurred shortly before 5:30 a.m. Sunday, June 25.
