Chrissie Zartman, a rising senior at Bishop Montgomery High School, can't stop playing high-level volleyball. On June 17, the Hermosa Beach resident, who led her high school team to a Southern California State Indoor Championship last fall, teamed with Fountain Valley's Tracy Lindquist (now at USC) to sweep seven matches and cop the title at a "AAA" beach volleyball tournament in Santa Monica. It was the duo's second "AAA" title in as many outings.
In an "A" tournament held the same day, recent Costa graduate Denelle Smalley of Manhattan Beach paired with Alyssa Rylander of Torrance to take the title and earn their "AA" rating.
Dax Holdren (Redondo Beach) and partner Todd Rogers overcame the loser's bracket and Brazilians Jose Loiola and Emmanuel Rego to capture the Planters Trail Mix AVP Chicago Open Sunday in a double final. The fourth seeds lost 15-9 to Loiola/Rego in the winner's bracket finals Sunday morning, but came back to beat Karch Kiraly/Adam Johnson 15-8 in the loser's bracket finals, earning another shot against the second seeded Brazilians. Playing flawlessly, Holdren/Rogers dominated the final, taking the first game 15-7. A Holdren kill at 6-4 in the seven-point double final gave his team the Chicago title, the first AVP win this year for Holdren/Rogers.
The AVP takes a week off before the Ford AVP Karch Kiraly Classic begins July 7 in Santa Barbara.
Note: LA Times reports Holdren and Rogers are suspended indefinitely from AVP.
The AYSO Region 34 South Redondo "Chill" finished second out of 16 teams in the girls under-10 division at the Annual Armed Forced Day Tournament in Torrance in mid-May. The Chill defeated teams from Pacific Palisades, Palos Verdes and Diamond Bar and tied a tough team from Canyon Country. It finished its post-season run with a 13-3-2 record. The tournament marked the last time the team would play together in its entirety, as 13 players have been recruited to local club soccer teams. The team members included defenders Elleota Wicks, Alicia Kolter, Rebecca Urbanczyk and Rachel Ellena, midfielders Megan Bucci, Shannon Cleary, Michelle Weiss and Daniella Zavella, and forwards Aly Drinkward, Katie Gin, Caitlin Pritzkat, Meagan Cleary and Myla Senff. Tending goal all year was the outstanding Christina Urbanczyk.
