Area children join Manhattan Beach Mayor Tim Lilligren, councilmembers Joyce Fahey, Linda Wilson and Walt Dougher, and Beach Cities Health District board members Jo Ann Woodward, Gil Abdalian and Vanessa Poster in moving a little dirt Saturday at a groundbreaking ceremony for the Marine Avenue Sports Complex in Manhattan Beach. Six of the seven acres, which used to be a TRW parking lot, will be transformed into little league baseball and soccer fields as part of a $2.8 million construction project. City Manager Geoff Dolan, whose casual conversation with TRW executive Peter Van Hafton over coffee at Pete's spurred the city's purchase of the site, said that the fields should be teeming with kids playing baseball by January 2001. A Beach Cities Health District-operated health and fitness complex for youth will follow.
