Manhattan Beach native Eric Fonoimoana teamed with Dain Blanton to win the season-opening AVP Santa Cruz Open Sunday in Santa Cruz, California. Fonoimoana and Blanton, who reached the Sunday final undefeated, dropped the first game 15-11 to the once beaten Brazilian team of Jose Loiola and Emmanuel Rego, before rebounding to take the title 7-4 in the seven-point double final, a format reinstituted for the AVP Tour in 2000. It was Fonoi's first-ever AVP win in California.
After its inaugural effort last year was a rousing success, Mervyn's California Beach Bash 2000 promises to be even bigger and bolder. It starts with superstars from the world of beach volleyball, with an AVP event for the men and a Beach Volleyball America tournament for the women. There also will be three different disciplines in extreme sports for skaters, skateboarders and cyclists: halfpipe, street course and the uniquely constructed "Soul Bowl."
