Commission changes mind on walkstreet wine

By 3-2 vote last Wednesday, the Manhattan Beach Planning Commission approved on-site sale and consumption of wine at Bacchus-Wine Made Simple, a wine store located at the corner of Manhattan Avenue and 10th Street in downtown Manhattan Beach. However, the Commission decided against allowing Bacchus to sell wine by the glass in the adjacent walkstreet patio, reversing a prior decision made in March on the issue. Commissioner Chuck Milam cast the deciding vote. Activist Don McPherson said that he and other residents who live and own property near Bacchus would appeal the decision to allow on-site consumption. A public hearing before the city council tentatively is scheduled for July 18.

MB beaches make grade

The ocean at the Manhattan Beach Pier and at 40thh Street in El Porto both received "A" grades in dry weather from the environmental group Heal the Bay when its annual report card was issued last Wednesday. The 40th Street site fared equally well in wet weather, when stormwater runoff typically pollutes the ocean. It was one of only eight beaches tested to receive an "A" grade under those conditions. The pier site received a wet weather grade of "C."
