St. Lawrence Martyr Boy's Volleyball team finished third in the Catholic Youth Organization championship tournament, SLM's highest-ever finish in the CYO. The girls' softball team was third in CYO, while the boys' track team -- lead by Brett Hall's first place finishes in the 100 and 200 -- and the girls' track team--behind Jessica Olson's second place finishes in the 100 and 200 -- both were fifth in CYO. The football team tied for its league championship, while the girls' volleyball and boys' basketball teams tied for the league runner-up spots.

 

 

West End Tennis Training Center

Just because Pete Sampras, and Lindsey Davenport got their starts at West End Racquet and Health Club training camps doesn't mean you have to be an aspiring pro to sign up for this summer's Junior Training Center program. Kids will be coached on stroke production and conditioning. But coach Dan Johnston also makes sure the kids, who can be as young as 4-years-old, have fun. Classes range from $8 for tiny tots, to $20 for advanced players. Club membership is not required. The first session begins June 26. West End is located at 4343 Spencer St., Torrance. West End Club offers Red Cross swimming

Red Cross swimming, from level 1 (beginners) to level VII (advanced) is being offered this summer at the West End Racquet and Health Club. Classes begin June 19. Club membership is not required. Classes range from $75 to $95. West End is located at 4343 Spencer St., Torrance. (310) 542-7373.

Seasprites plans Summersplash

The Seasprints Children's Center in Hermosa Beach is offering its Summersplash program for chidlren 5- through 13-years-old. The 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. program includes cooking, arts and crafts, wood working and sewing workshops. Field trips include visits to Seaside Lagoon, local tidepools, Knotts Berry Farm, the LA Science Museum, and IMAX. The three- to five- day sessions range in cost from $90 to $150. Science Fair

The Aerospace Corporation in El Segundo is holding is popular science fair today. Students from L.A., including South Bay Lutheran, El Segundo and California Academy of Math and Science participate. Winner receives paid summer positions and U.S. savings bonds. Contact Dave Jonta 336-5041.

Just swimmingly

Mira Costa is the site of the Junior Guard swim test today from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Returning JG's can pick up their uniforms, just bring your letter of authorization. Whale of a day

Cabrillo Marine Aquarium hopes you will travel on over and enjoy a day of Sea-sonal fun at the annual Whale Fiesta. Lots of fun activities for the whole family including crafts, games, face painting and educational booths. A fun way to support the aquarium. 548-7562.

Learn Child Safety

Soccer fever

Try outs and registration continue on an ongoing basis for Torrance United Girls Soccer Club. This program is for girls under 18 years old. Use Your Head

Harbor Regional Center is sponsoring several activities focused on helmet safety for bike riders, skateboarder and rollerbladers. The first activity is an interactive poster and essay contest, open to children and teens. The entry consists of a poster, essay or slogan describing why children should "Use your head - Get in the Helmet Habit". Prizes include new bikes, new helmets and gift certificates.
