Boys' Volleyball (19-9): Lost 3-1 to Gahr in quarterfinals of CIF Div. II playoffs Friday. Owen Hanson led the defending CIF finalist Sea Hawks with 25 kills and six blocks. Sean Loeffler added 14 kills and 11 digs. Season complete.

Boys' Swimming (4-3): Season complete.

Girls' Swimming (4-3): Season complete.

Boys' Track (5-2): Season complete.

Girls' Track (6-1): Ofa Tulikihihifo finished fourth in the shot put at the CIF Div. III Finals Saturday at Cerritos College. Her put of 37 feet, nine inches, however, was not enough to qualify for Friday's Master's Meet. Daisy DeMelo placed seventh in the 1600 meters, running 5:15.89, and also did not qualify for the Master's Meet. Season complete.

Mustang round-up

Baseball (18-9): Knocked off Mission Viejo 4-1 in CIF Div. II playoff game Friday. David Johnson tossed a three-hitter to improve his record to 12-2. He also went 2-for-3 at the plate with two RBIs. Lost 8-2 Tuesday at home to Santa Barbara. See accompanying story. Season complete.

Softball (21-6): Blanked Rio Mesa 2-0 Friday in opening round of CIF Div. II playoffs. Fireballer Samantha Lavino three a no-hitter against the Spartans, striking out 12. Megan Julian scored the game's first run in the first inning and Laura Gitnick stole home in the second. Shut out Marina 1-0 Tuesday. See accompanying story. Next: today at 3:15 versus winner of Colton/Corona at a site to be determined.

Boys' Volleyball (22-6): Won 3-2 thriller Friday at Loyola in CIF Div. II quarterfinal match. The Mustangs, down two games to one, rallied to win games four and five by 16-14 counts. In game five, Costa trailed 10-3 and withstood two match points before prevailing. Jason Spratt collected 32 kills for Costa, including the match winner. Aleks Dankers added 17. Next: played yesterday versus Newport Harbor at Redondo in semifinals.

Boys' Track (5-4): Season complete.

Girls' Track (8-1): Lynn Dixon and Cosette Smith both qualified for Friday's Master's Meet at Cerritos College with outstanding long distance running efforts Saturday at the CIF Div. I Finals. Dixon placed second in the 1600 meters, running a scorching 4:57.19. Smith took third in the same race, setting a personal best of 5:00.31. Smith also set a personal best in the 3200, where she ran 10:56.9 to finish fourth. Melanie Murray placed seventh in the discus, with a toss of 112 feet, but did not advance. Krystal Scarcliff and Dixon, who had qualified for the 800-meter race, chose not to run.

Boys' Golf (12-4): Three golfers competed in the CIF Individual Regionals May 15 at Seacliff Country Club in Huntington Beach. Bill Igoe fired an 80, Aaron Landry 81 and Steve Murillo 83, but they did not make the cut for the CIF Individual Finals, which came at 78. Season complete.

Boys' Tennis (20-3): Hammered Rim of the World (Lake Arrowhead) 14-4 last Thursday in second round of CIF Div. III playoffs. Kuba Gebel and K.C. Corkery swept their singles matches. Jonathan Howell won two of three sets. Corkery advanced to the CIF Individuals Finals tournament, winning two matches Saturday in the CIF Individual Prelims Saturday at Pasadena High School. Gebel and the top doubles team of Ryan Pfeifle-Jesse Sekhon did not advance. Lost 14-4 to top-seeded Westlake at home Tuesday. The Mustangs were the better sports, but the Warriors had more weapons, sweeping the doubles matches. Corkery won his three singles matches 6-3, 6-2, 6-0 to lead Costa. Next: Corkery takes on CIF in the Individual Finals Friday at Seacliff Country Club.

Davis, Jordan take Santa Monica

Rising starts Annett Davis and Jennifer Johnson Jordan won the Beach Volleyball America Santa Monica Open Sunday. The second seeds, from Tarzana, defeated the fourth-seeded team of Nancy Reno (Encinitas) and Linda Hanley (Pacific Palisades) 15-13 in the final. The top seeds, featuring Manhattan Beach native Holly McPeak and former NCAA Player of the Year Misty May, finished third.

Mervyn's Beach Bash 2000 hits Hermosa June 8-11

After its inaugural effort last year was a rousing success, Mervyn's California Beach Bash 2000 promises to be even bigger and bolder. It starts with superstars from the world of beach volleyball, with an AVP event for the men and a Beach Volleyball America tournament for the women. There also will be three different disciplines in extreme sports for skaters, skateboarders and cyclists: halfpipe, street course and the uniquely constructed "Soul Bowl."

Fernandez gets wrestling honor

Mira Costa High School coaching legend Jack Fernandez is one of 19 new inductees into the California State Wrestling Hall of Fame. Fernandez coached the Mustangs from 1957 to 1983, compiling a dual meet record of 223-34-1 during that span. His teams won 17 league championships and five CIF titles during his tenure.

Community Sports

Redondo Beach Slo-pitch softball: Men's, women's and co-ed slo-pitch softball leagues are forming and will begin play the week of June 18. Cost to field a team is $360. Registration runs through June 9. To register or for more info., call Dave Albright at 318-0610, ext. 3533.

Hermosa Beach Over-the-Line: Teams are being accepted for the 4th Annual Spring Hermosa Beach Over-the-Line Softball Tournament to be played May 27 just south of the Hermosa Beach Pier. There are men's and women's divisions and all teams are guaranteed four games for their $45 entry fee.
