Sea Hawk talk

Boys' Basketball (24-4): Destroyed Moorpark 89-66 in quarterfinal game of CIF Div. II-AA playoffs Friday night. Trailing 13-11 after one quarter, the Sea Hawks used effective full court pressure to outscore the Musketeers 28-9 in the second quarter and take command of the game. Senior center Andrew Zahn scored 14 of his game-high 27 points in the quarter. Moorpark pulled within 12 points on several occasions in the third quarter, living on the three-point shot, but Redondo countered each run with one of its own. The Hawks pulled away from a tiring Musketeer team in the fourth quarter, opening up a 26-point lead, 84-58, on the second of Walter White's two straight triples.

"We played as a team and not individuals," said Redondo head coach Jim Nielsen. "We really moved the ball around. I was happy about that."

In addition to Zahn's 27 points, Ryan Mollins had 15 points and seven assists and Dijon Thompson added 16 points and six assists.

White finished with 12 points and eight rebounds.

Next: yesterday versus Compton Dominguez, the nation's top-ranked team, in CIF semifinals. If the Hawks win, they play Saturday at 2:15 p.m. at the Arrowhead Pond in Anaheim.

Girls' Basketball (25-5): Upended Paso Robles 60-42 on the road last Wednesday in a second round CIF Div. II-AA playoff game. The third-seeded Sea Hawks built their advantage in every quarter, outscoring the Bearcats by two after one quarter, by six at halftime and by 12 after three quarters. Sophomore forward Ofa Tulikihihifo paced Redondo with 20 points and 14 rebounds. Danielle Payne added 11 points, while Jackie Packard chipped in with nine. Advanced to the semifinals with convincing 67-42 home win over Sonora Saturday night. Reached finals for first time in school history with 71-53 win over Foothill Tuesday. See accompanying story. Next: Friday at 8:15 p.m. at Long Beach State's Pyramid.

Mustang round-up

Girls' Basketball (18-10): Lost to Edison of Huntington Beach 53-38 last Wednesday in third round of Div. I-A playoffs. Tara Whiteside led Costa with 16 points. See accompanying story. Season complete.

Girls' Soccer (26-2-3): Took care of Mission Viejo (19-7-1) 4-1 on a muddy field last Thursday in the CIF Div. II quarterfinals. Ydun Donahoe took a perfect crossing pass from Sarah Gelb to score a goal in the game's first 10 seconds. After the Diablos tied the score, Shannon Cross scored the first of her three goals, cleaning up a shot that Sara Davis ricocheted off the goal post to give Costa a 2-1 lead midway through the half. Cross scored again six minutes later on a breakaway after a nice through ball from Cosette Smith, and added an insurance goal in the second half on a 50-yard boot after a failed clearing attempt by the Mission goalie.

The Diablos dominated the second half, but the Mustangs got outstanding second-half goaltending from Chelsea McCarthy and superior defensive play from senior sweeper Tricia Hastings, who played despite a pulled hamstring.

Blanked Santa Margarita 1-0 Tuesday to reach Div. II final. See accompanying story. Next: versus Buena Saturday at 6 p.m. at La Mirada High School.

Wrestling (1-3): Senior Jon Cordero advanced to the State Meet this weekend in Stockton with an outstanding second place finish in the 217-pound class at the Master's Meet Saturday at Fountain Valley. Cordero, the CIF Div. III champion, was the South Bay's highest finisher.
