John Knight, Viola Lau and Benjamin Lin won the fourth, fifth and sixth grade competitions, respectively, at the 13th Annual Spelling Bee held last week at Manhattan Village. Knight of Palos Verdes captured the fourth grade bee, correctly spelling "frivolous" and "quagmire." Nolan Caine of Manhattan Beach placed second. Lau of Torrance took the fifth grade competition with the words "mesquite" and "xylophone." Jacqueline Basu of Palos Verdes was the runner-up. Finally, Lin of Torrance correctly spelled "accumulate" and "etiquette" to win the sixth grade bee. Dennis Palmer of Manhattan Beach finished second.

Lions' happy hour tonight

The Manhattan Beach Lion's Club is hosting a happy hour for residents and businesspersons interested in learning about Lionism in Manhattan Beach. The get-together, themed "Come as you are," is tonight, March 2, at 6 p.m. at Hawthorne Savings in the Manhattan Village Shopping Center.

Benefit Fashion Show Sunday

The Mira Costa girls' cross country team will model the "Haute Hippie" clothes of the Manhattan Beach boutique Flip Flop Sunday, March 5 at the Joslyn Center in Manhattan Beach at 2 p.m. Tickets for the fashion show are $20 for adults, $10 for students and children. Roundhouse story time

The new Kid's Kelp Forest exhibit at the Manhattan Beach Roundhouse Aquarium located at the end of the Manhattan Beach Pier is the setting for Children's Sea Story time, every Sunday at 11 a.m. All children and adults are invited to participate. Costa kids film extras

A group of Mira Costa students made the trek to the Pyramid at Cal State Long Beach Feb. 18 to appear as extras in the Adam Sandler film "Little Nicky." From 2 to 11 p.m., they cheered and booed as Sandler, in the title role, played a demonic game of basketball against his two brothers. The film is due for release this fall. ER
